Crystal Coat Application Question

So I used Essence on the roof of my truck yesterday and wanted to coat the roof with crystal coat.

All work performed in the garage away from sun of course.

I applied with LC Foam Coating Applicator

I've read all the reviews and directions but I obviously screwed the application up.

I think I put too much on there.

Just a pea size? I put a line on accident because the liquid came out too quickly and worked it into about a 3x3 foot section, (crossed vertical line application) and it was SET, it had the hardest time removing it with any MF towel I tried. So I sprayed it with qd and wiped it off but ended up having to polish that area of the roof again with sf4500. I only let it set for 1 minute and it was near impossible to remove without severe agitation which is not good for the clear of course.

So I know I put this on way too heavy and I plan to retry application but am wondering if I should be using a yellow foam circle pad applicator or something else.

I'm at work today but when I get home I'm gonna try just one pea size drop and a 2x2 area
But it feels like it flashed way too quickly- is that because I used too much?

I'm thinking I might have to remove it quicker than the 1 minute recommended wait time.

I have read a few posts about this being grabby on removal at times but I'm pretty sure this happened because I accidentally put too much on the applicator.

Could this be moved into a spray bottle? I haven't tried yet but it's pretty thin liquid and it might work. Thoughts?

I was able to put pbl v2 on a small area of the roof as well and it was super easy to use. This is my first time playing with crystal coat.

What did I do wrong here?

I poured some into an old Cquartz bottle I had and I found it was much easier to get a small amount onto the applicator.
If you apply it thinner you shouldn't have any problems taking it off with a nice plush mf towel.

you never mentioned what type of towel you were using to remove it

initially the purple ultra plush from cobra, then the flat weave side

then went down to gold cobra , both sides
grey 530 cobra, both sides
ended up spraying with QD and rubbing in a WW cobra towel to get most of it off but there were still spots so I polished it down with my duetto yellow rupes pad and sf4500

I was considering moving a little amount to a small spray bottle and giving it a shot but I don't know if its thin enough to spray out effectively but I suppose there is 1 way to find out---I have only used pbl and its a spray so I guess I have an application curve to work on
 
I've sprayed Crystal Coat before with no issues
I would tend to spray onto the applicator instead of the vehicle surface and try doing smaller sections
I also found if you run a fan across the area it will help with flashing

I will give a small amount a shot and a small spray bottle as well since I have a problem with over application on most things
 
Man am I glad that I am not the only one. I feel like a freaking ROOKIE!!

I did the exact same thing. Tried to put some on my foam applicator and a ton came out. Then trying to wipe it off it was already flashed. Unfortunately I tried more and more on other panels and ended up the entire Civic hatchback I am doing is a mess. I decided to wait till tomorrow am and TRY to polish it off or down a little. I hope I am not waiting too long?

SHOULD I go out right now (been about 3 hours) and try to polish it off?

I am most definitely going to put it into a spray bottle to apply it next time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UGH why didnt BF put it in a spray? Ive only used Duragloss coating before and it is also a spray as OP said about PBL.
 
I read that post too over there! Geesh I wish I had read about it before trying it on a BLACK car! I went out and polished it off. The car is now going to get some Duragloss paint coating Sunday!!!! Im so relieved that the BFCC came off.
 
My method was one line first, apply, IMMEDEATLY wipe.

Then 3 or 4 dots, apply wipe immediately.

I apply and wipe with all coatings right away. been stung, so that's the way I do it.
 
Haven't used mine yet, I was going to get an LC applicator but after reading that thread (glad I did) I'm going to try the Carpro Applicator instead. So it seems like this stuff is getting really sticky on people...what do you guys do with your MF towels after buffing out this excess? Are you able to wash them and they clean up well or does some of the product stick to it ruining it?
 
Ok i tried again. Small foam applicator. Lc coating applicator...one bead only

It hazed up somewhat evenly, sorry i couldn't catch it on my cell phone camera, you could see the area i was working was noticeably darker but it had a tacky touch...i polished it out again.

I guess i need to go back to square 1 next time i have a chance. Already pulled the truck outside and now its raining.

I know this shouldn't be hard to apply but embarrassingly it is for me.

I didn't try to spray it i just got frustrated and gave up.
Even tried wiping 20 seconds after applying but it flashed so quickly.

I doubt its visible but it is a square right in front of the tail light under the plastic on top of the bed
 
How long ago did you open the bottle?

I know that after opening the bottle, you have to really crank down the top of it. More than you think.

So I've been wondering if maybe the stuff is getting exposed to air.

Opened the same evening. a few moments before applying i removed the seal under the cap.
 
Well needless to say I gave up on the BFCC and went with some Pinnacle Souveran. Here are the results after a second polish to get the BFCC off and application of PLS (liquid version)

I havent given up on the BFCC but I wont be using it anytime soon on another customers car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Wow, this thread is a bit concerning. I'd never heard anything bad about this product but it now seems like a real headache. I was gonna do my dad's new truck and his wife's car this summer with it, but now I might opt for something else.
 
Start with a TINY TINY TINY area and see how it reacts for you. You may never see that problem. Unless you havent already bought it, then I would go with something else.
