I finnaly got a beater for the winter :dancin

A friends aunt was getting ready to donate her 98 sable when she said wait don't donate it a friend of mine is looking for a winter car.

So $51.00 later they gave me the car (the $50.00 was for a Gift Certificate to a local restraunt) the $1.00 was because they wouldn't just give me the car. (don't ask weird people)

Any way here's my question. The garage space I thought I had is no longer so I think im just going to cover the car. But Im concerned about the convertible top. Is there any precautions I should take on this?

Also is there anything I should do to the paint before putting a car cover on the car for 2+ months?

thanks
nick

Nick you have two ways to go...first option which is what i use for my 67 conv. is to get an instant garage...you can get one at a BJ's , K-mart, Costco etc..they come from simple to very sophisticated.
Second option is to get a really good cover, the cheap ones will casue you more headaches than you can imagine (been there done that  )....Dwayne is carrying a great line of quality covers and you'll get 10% off too...I know how much time and effort you put into your baby so don't cut corners here;)

Thanks steve,

Im going to take a look into those instant garages. However I think that im going to end up with the car cover.

Is there anything Should do for added protection to the vinal roof? once I put the cover on the car would it be a good idea to cover the whole thing with a waterproof tarp?

biggest problem with covers and tarps are that if they don't fit like a glove, the wind in the winter wll flap t around and cause marring on the paint...now if your car was white then no biggies, but since yours is black, i'm not usre you are going to be happy with what you see in the Spring...I knowthat the BJ's up here still has a few of those instant garages left and they're not that expensive:)

And if you do cover it don't ever take the cover off if frozen. I have heard stories of people peeling their paint off because the cover was frozen to the car and they ripped on it to get it free.

I know:nono I know:nono :angry

Any chance you could find indoor storage for it?
There used to be a warehouse in our area that stored boats and cars for the winter season for not a lot of money. If it were covered and under roof, it seems like you would be pretty trouble free.

That would not be a good idea. A good car cover fabric is both moisture resistant and breathable which allows any moisture or condensation to escape. A waterproof tarp would trap the moisture which could accelerate corrosion, cause problems with fabric rot, etc..

I once rented a storage space in one of those “U-Store-It” type of places. I put my old ’67 Impala SS in there one winter a few years ago. You just have to make sure there is enough room to pull the car in, sometimes those places have very narrow drives.
