Cottonwood Tree Sap

We have a vehicle that has months of accumulated cottonwood tree sap on the roof. Almost black on a silver van. Anyone got any ideas on the best way to remove this? And then what's best to keep it from sticking so well in the future?

You may want to try mineral spirits and saturate a rag in it and lay it on the sap for a bit to soften it then aggitate it a bit to see if it comes off. Cottonwood sap can be a bear once it sets up.
 
Please cut that tree down !! Cottonwoods should be banned from all cities and towns:rolleyes: they create nothing but a big mess everywhere IMHO
