Cotton terry towels with S&W?

When I first started using Poorboy's S&W, I used cotton terry towels with it.
There didn't seem to be any marring problems, but as with most of us, I switched my towels to micro fiber.
My MF towels became my towel of choice for S&W as well. Not because of any problem, just because it seemed like the thing to do.
Now to the point of my post.
Meguiar's is selling a kit in Australia to help with the water shortage problem for detailers.
They are including a cotton terry towel to be used for the initial cleaning pass and a MF towel for the finish pass. If Meguiar's thinks the cotton terry is the best choice for the first pass, maybe I should give some thought to using some of the many cotton terry towels I still have for that purpose with S&W.
How about some comments? Have we maybe bought into the MF thing a little more than it deserves? I have had good luck with the MF towels, but I never really had any problem with cotton terry towels either. They were all I had available for over 50 years and I didn't have any problems with them.

You are lucky to have an option. I would say do a test and see if you can tell a difference. As for me, with hundreds of MF towels sitting in my storage bins, I think I will pass with purchasing any cotton towels at the present. Unless you can see a difference and report back same.

I think that it has to do with the quality of the material. The same way that there are inexpensive MF's out there that I would not use on my paint I am sure that there are quality terrys that would not harm the paint either

I think we all used terry before we had microfiber, but like cw said, most of us have so much microfiber why bother going backwards in technology. Maybe Meguiar's got a good deal on terry;)

I have a select few terry towel left, but have had no urge to pick one up...the MF really dose the job and with no hassle and it seems like a better one than terry...I do remember that some of the terry linted on the car allot..the older ones and for that I have decided to me a MF Man

I would imagine terry would be a fine choice as long as its plush and doesn't have some sort of edging or stitching that would be apt to cause marring.

Back in the days that I used terry on the LSP I would fold the towel so that there was no edges down, pain the butt, however that was the only way to insure that there was no hard edges to worry about...MF has taken that away hassle free.

I still use terry for some things like to put on the floor so that I can kneel down on them...LOL

I did the same thing, but for a different reason. I felt the folded towel let me spread the buffing pressure over a larger area without my fingers causing any points of pressure.
I do the same thing with MF towels today.

Hard edges or stitching is no problem. Just cut the edges and stitching off. If you use pinking shears, you will have virtually no raveling of the cut edge.

If you get yourself a low seat/stool, you won't need to kneel down. If you do decide that kneeling is the best way for you to reach an area, buy some of the cheap kneepads that are available. I use a pair of the pads when I vacuum the pontoon boat.

IMHO, the most important towel characteristics for use with S&W are:
- softness
- high pile texture
- ability to rapidly absorb very thin liquids

no , but they are good to wear while polishing :D

I guess washing a filthy car for little pay could be considered a dirty deed done dirt cheap.:stick

On a more serious note, it would have to be an ultra plush terry towel for it to go near my paint. I'm really not sure that I'd go with them considering the large quantity of microfiber towels that I have now though.
