Convince my stepdad...

Ok so today I decided to do my monthly washing of MF's and applicators.

I was my MFs and Foam Applicators together in the washing machine using the proper technique of course. I threw them in the dryer when my stepdad comes walking in. And being the guy he is has to have his nose in everything and he said "you know washing those towels will probably clog up something and it will mess up blah blah". Well I said the towels i use have glass cleaner and woolite on them from cleaning my interior and the wax applicators go in the sink and are cleaned first there and then thrown in the washing machine. Then Mr. KnowItAll had to comment on that saying well even washing them in the sink it goes to the septic tank and all this.

Now did I just want to argue with him or did I have a valid point that the point in a detergent is to break down the residue in the towels and applicators allowing it to be safe. In essence, how is dirt any different that wax. Wouldnt they both break down in a detergent the same way.

Please give me some good comments to throw back in his face. I love to make him feel stupid.

I am a stepdad and we have the opposite problem....the real dad is the idiot.

I would not go out of your way toi make him feel stupid though, like it or not I imagine it is his house your living in and his septic system he is concerned about and his right to tell you what you can and cannot do.

You might get a whole lot further by trying to find a good anser to his concerns and let him know you respect his home

LOLLL!! The major problem is that he "knows" everything. My mom and I are always talking behind his back about how he thinks he knows everything. Earlier he said "you ought to take them to was at a laundry mat and mess someone elses washing machine up". Then he said "in my 55 years ive seen it mess up even laundry mat machines". I laughed my *** off for the longest time because A) How the heck does he know that a washing machine messed up due to wax because B) He's never worked at a laundry mat C) Never worked for anything dealing with laundry mats D) Never worked on any washing machines E) Never waxed his own car F) Absolutely knows nothing about wax in its general state and I could literally go on forever. He makes stuff up off the top of his head to try to justify him being right.

Kevmo: Actually your way wrong there..hehe. Thats why I am allowed to speak my opinion. This house is more my house than his literally! Him and my mom broke up a while. He then got laid off work and tried to come back. He ended up coming back and by that time my mom and I had already moved and she bought a new house. He has not paid one bill in this house because I am the one who handles my moms financial matters. I am a junior in college going for my degree in Trust Management. I know what he pays and what he doesnt pay. He pays for his own car, his own gas, and he pays for groceries every once in a while.

For those who dont know Trust Management (which are probably many due to the fact that the college I am attending is the only school in the country with a Trust program.

To put it simple: I take care of peoples investments and money. I am working on my BBA and after another year will be working on my MBA.

Ok enough about my personal life..lol

Can someone give me some valid reasons that wax residue is not going to mess up the washing machine/septic or have I hit the spot basically that a detergent is going to break down the wax just as it breaks down other compounds.

I've never heard of such a thing. However, my wife doesn't let me go near the machines because she thinks any of the chemicals might cause a fire somewhere along the line of washing or drying and burn the house down and down goes her precious brand-name clothes and jewerly blah blah blah.

Which means I hand wash everything. And I have to use a clothes hanger and naturally dry it. A PITA but as long as my wife doesn't make a peep about it, I'm fine with it. I want to try washing it when my wife is out of the house just for the heck of it.

Reminder to all:

Please do not make multiple posts one after the other. If you realized you had more to say in your first post please go back and add to it. Thanks

Why don't you just buy your own washing machine used. they r like less than $100....

Prove that it will last forever....

:D

Cut,

I stand corrected...if what you say is true then he has not right to quesiton you.

There are some folk on here that are very chemical savy and could probably give you a great, detailed answer to help you prove your point.

I can tell you I have been washing my thing sin the family machine for years and have had no problems of any sort.

Good Luck

Here's some truth. All detergents (laundry soap, hand soap, dish soap, etc) are designed to breakdown mixtures and compounds (mud, mustard, wax, oil, etc). Once broken down, they have very little chance to "regroup" and cause any harm to washing machines, sinks, septic tanks or any other washing facility or storage area. On the other hand, arguing over who has the right to rule the roost is futile.

tell him hes more likely to clog up the washing machine with regular bath towels as opposed to microfiber towels. Most bath towels are cotton/terry blend and the fibers can tear off very easily and MF fibers dont. I would have just said well if they mess up the washer then you probably didnt buy a good enough washer to begin with. My GF's grandmother once told me i was going to mess up the washer and the only thing i said was " if it messes up illbuy you another one" that shut her up.

If he's worried about the wax residue clogging up the washing machine, prep and wax his hood. Let him feel the surface (ahhh!), then take a small mix of detergent and water--I did say his hood--and clean a small section.

After he feels the sample area, there should be no question about the purpose of detergent.

seracis: PERFECT ANSWER! Just what I was looking for.

Thanks guys as I thought I was right in this situation. It just didnt make sense that wax would cause any harm.

I've never had a problem with wax or anything else in the washing machine. I imagine if there was a risk, there would be warning on the wax bottle or the washing machine instructions somewhere.

The only time I do laundry is when I wash my detailing stuff. Pads, MFs, etc. are not allowed to be touched by the other half. I'm paranoid she'll mix MF with cotton towels or put fabric softener.

It's kinda funny, $100 shirts no problem she does it all. $5 MFs I don't let her anywhere near them.

Tell him the maintenance to the septic tank every two years will take care of it (depends on size). He has followed the maintenance schedule, hasn't he?

Also, I would think the wax/ compounds would settle out and absorb into the ground, only problem you'd have is if they floated.

That reminded me that I actually have some 845 on the way--very exciting!

Yes, in retrospect, I would use a beauty wax to ensure success:D

Proving him wrong probably won't shut him up. Hope i don't sound like Dr Phil but maybe you guys should just sit down and talk about the "real" problem which from reading your posts seems to go deeper than washing towels and pads.
