Contaminants in clay after use?

The following quote from another thread made me wonder about convential clay use.

Ok i have a question about it. With clay it gets dirty as you use it you fold it over and kneed it into itself Yada Yada Yada. So how to you keep from damaging the paint surface with the cube since it appears that you can not kneed it like clay? Where are the contaminants going into the Cube? Is the cube disappearing as you use it?
What's to keep the contaminants you just kneaded into the clay from working their way back to the surface. Has this ever happened to any of you?

Charles

If I fold the clay and dirt is showing i fold it again. If I keep kneading the clay and dirt continues to appear I throw it away.

This is a good question although i do use S & W on the clay before i fold,i always wondered about the particles left behind. But then again this could be why they call it clay Magic..Naah

This has not happen to me but what i try to look for in the clay when kneading it is if there appear to be any holes that get created by debris when pulling the clay apart to stretch it out, I throw the clay away. I use half a clay bar at a time and usually get two to three uses of it depending on how dirty the car was. For example on my wifes car this past weekend it had been neglected to the point where i had only used the half clay bar once prior to her car and I have thrown it way because it just seemed to dirty to me and removed a lot of junk.

Richard how big is the claybar your using. I break my clay in 1/4 depending on the gram of the bars. Meguars bar i bought is much thinner now this may be a claybar wherei might use half ..

I do not think there is any reason to think that the contaminants could not work there way back.

In my readings of detailing one of the little Gems that I remember is a comment made on claying by a member of Autopian called Bill North. In an article that he wrote on the many facets of detailing he mentioned clay. In this article he stated that he cuts his bars of clay into 15 equal pieces. Then uses a small piece of clay for each section of the vehicle that he is claying. Upon completion of a panel the piece of clay is thrown away.

CharlesW, your question is the very reason that I employ the method of claying that Bill North advocates. Using this method for all intents and purposes gives me contaminant free clay each time that i put it to a painted surface.

Richard how did you like the PBs clay. I havn't had a chance to use mine, are their any clays that you have used to compare them too. redhotzx9 said the PBs cly looked to be identical to pinnacle clay bars.

Sounds like a system worth trying. Thanks.

If it takes 15 pieces to do a car, can you do your truck with 30? :)

Charles

Actually if you use two or three on the hood, roof, and tonneau cover then one piece per panel after that you will come out to about 15 for my truck. It is just a guideline that seemed to make sense to me. It makes me feel very comfortable that I will not instill any marks other than what my constant QD'ing creates.

Because of the possibility of creating some damage, I very seldom clay. There has never been a problem, but I just don't feel that comfortable rubbing that stuff all over my nice shiny paint. :) The multiple piece thing might make me a little more comfortable.
Spring will soon be here and a good after winter cleanup is about due.

I have used the Mothers clay which was good. I have used the Adams, CG, Poorboys which are all the same. At least in my opinion they are and it would not surprise me at all that the Pinnacle is as well. They are all packaged identical and have the exact same consistency etc. I like all of them
but the A,CG,PB seems to be a little softer than the Mothers and is very nice it works very well. I am pretty sure it is what is considered a finer clay bar not a course. I know there is a company that claims to have to grades course and fine but i cannot recall where or who it is.

Anyone ever try this to remove contaminants from their clay? I was thinking of trying some, but there's not much else I would order right now. So, I haven't bothered.

I'm a tiny clay piece user. I fold in, but I do not kneed. Once I feel a texture or see dirt, I put it in a tin to use for wheels, wheel wells, shaving, Valentine's day massages, etc.

When I am not doing an extensive paint treatment, chemical or polish, I always have a new piece of clay. The older ones find their use some how.
