Compound left on paint???

Am I using to much compound? I used my rotary last weekend with 3M machine glaze. The finish came out great but I had LOTS of compound left on the car. As I was buffing it would not come off so I had to wipe it off with a damp MF towel. What amount to use and how long to stay in one section? I have been applying a deent ring around the pad and spreading it around about a 3x3 section. I also used a 3M waffle pad, is there any benifit to using a flat style finishing pad?

Try a 50/50 mix of water and alcohol, it is much better than water alone. It seems that if you overheat or let it dry too long it is a bear to remove, try the mix.
 
I use a soft MF and Meg's #34 for this. If it's just a *little* residue and I'm using AIO, I'll just let the AIO clean it off.
 
I am very pleased with the results I get with 3M but I feel I am wasting time going back to clean up left over product. So if its more of a 3M issue what is another good product to use on swirls with a rotary. I have only used 3M so far, I have read alot about Menzerna and AIO but never tried either.
 
Another note on a couple other 3M products. This spring i have been using up some older products that have been at the back of my shelf.



I had to do a very quick polish(rotary+polishing pad) on a truck at work, its Friday at 4:00 so i reach for 3M medium cut cleaner wax, it is almost empty so i mixed in a little 3M light cut wax. In the past i hated it because it was hard to work with, gummed up the pad and paint and would chatter quite a bit.



This time i tried to wipe it off as soon as done the panel, this worked for a while. Then i tried a water mist on the paint and pad, this helped. Couldn't use 50/50 Iso mix as that would remove the wax. Then i misted the pad with a little Mothers Showtime(more spring cleaning) i was amazed this cured all problems. Chatter was gone, wiped off easy.



The truck was very swirled and scratched and this did by no means remove them, it might have burnished the paint, as it had a nice glow after. I will probably use it again, but not buy it again, there are other products that work as well.
 
Although I don't use 3M (I use Malco Rejuvenator or Meguiars #83), after polishing I just rewash the car with soap/water just as though it was dirty. I want to make sure all polish is completely off before I wax. The real trick is to use the least amount of product that does the job. Knowning what that is takes experience but getting it right saves not only money but lots of time removing excess product. That also goes for wax to.
 
I don't think rewashing will remove the residue, as it can be fairly thick.

Yes knowing the right amount of product is ideal.
 
No more 3M products for me. Since 2004 it's Menzerna all the way. Other cutting compounds cut but don't restore the gloss

In my garage is Powergloss, Intensive polish, final polish (PO87MF), Final polish II and soon will be PO85RD3.01 and PO85RD

The results I am getting are mind blowing and no need to wash the car after buffing. Absolutely no sling or product residue

I have heaps of other polishes including SONUS SFX, some solvent and voc free wet look polishes and many top shelf autopian brands including the new detailers pride and they are all superb but for the ultimate finish you need menzerna



My latest detail is a black 1974 Mercedez Benz SL

IP, FPII, Poorboys SSR 1 followed by Clearkote VM, RMG and Yellow creme wax

An almost flawless finish, need RD to be 100%

I did the hood of my car which is 2K galaxy blue metallic with IP, FP II, Sonus SFX 3 and the clearkote and it's like glass with great depth and 99.9% swirl mark free



I Really must thank the following members who I really respect and admire. Still have more to learn and more practice but at least I am comfortable and capable of buffing.

Like i said, it by no means removed much marring, but did give a nice fast shine
