Collinite vs Meguiar's #16

I've only used #16 and it's worked like a champ as far as durability. I like the crayon smell it has. So little goes a long way, 1 tin can last 6+ yrs easy. I've used it on dark blue and it looked great to my eyes. If I feel it need a little something VM/RMG or Danse glaze will give me what I need.

But....the Collinites: I don't think that there has been a single LSP line that has consistently received such high regard over such a long period of time as Collinite, whether it be the 476, IW, or 915. To think that I have never tried any of them seems, well,......unlike me! ;)

:

If I may, M16 has been around for what? sixty or so years ??

And people are still using it with enthusiasm.

That, my friend is the very definition of consistently over a long preiod of time.:)

You have a point to an extent, but I would counter by saying that I was specifically talking about peoples comments/recommendations here at Autopia, and I would not say that #16 has received nearly as many recommendations here as the Collinites over the last several years.

probably because #16 is no longer widely available, but I see your point.

truth is, we all have a garage full of really cool LSP's, it gets hard to choose which one to use some days.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I only have one single LSP here.

... one of the thoughts going through my mind regarding these two products is that I could use them on other peoples cars that I detail. Why? Because most of the friends/family members whose vehicles I detail simply will not be waxing their cars, so I thought I should put something on that would give the best protection and last as long as possible...

While not as durable as Collinite 476S, the #16 does last for a good long time, and its beading is likely to impress non-autopians.

Protection-wise, #16 does well IME; my wife's #16ed Audi cleans up nicely after long roadtrips, with little-or-no etching from bugs that might've been on there for a long time. Compare that to my UPPed Audi, which sometimes gets etching from bugs after just a long weekend!

You raise a very good point regarding the price factor and uniqueness of the #16. Can I really go wrong for 13 bucks?? Even if I use it ONCE, it won't break the bank.

I suspect you'll use it more than once. I find it very user-friendly, a product I simply *enjoy* using.

Well, noting that I have both 845 and 476S on the shelf, I use #16 on my wife's daily driver.

Eh...I wouldn't worry much about how new/old stock it is. I've never had a well-sealed tin of paste wax go bad that I can recall, and I use plenty of really old products.

True.

Well, I do have Collinite 845 IW ordered and on the way. Now I just need to order the #16 off ebay.

Hey Rob,

I haven't seen any 16 on ebay lately; it seems the supply was very quickly snatched up. But you know me.. I'm always there to help you spend your money... Meguiar's M16 Paste Wax

In stock, and ready to ship. :xyxthumbs

Supe,

Is this the same stuff that was being sold on ebay or is this a new formulation? I know, it *says* original formula but inquiring minds want to know if it's the "real deal."

Yep, I made note that ADS has #16 in stock in another thread recently.

The ebay seller still has them available for the same price with free shipping.

It's the real McCoy. I'm surprised he still has it in stock, actually.

Waitaminute..wasssatnow? Shoot, I must have the wrong seller name. Think I'll go search the bay right now. What seller name do you have, Rob??

Edit: I found this: Meguiars Mirror Glaze Professional Paste Wax:eBay Motors (item 230410212184 end time Dec-19-09 03:44:44 PST)

So it's the same price as Rick at ADS but with free shipping. Honestly, I'd rather give the business to Rick. That's not the ebayer that was selling m16 recently, I don't think. A few months ago, Autopians were posting that they were getting 16 from ebay for like six bucks a tin. *That* was the guy I was talking about.

I used M16 on my Dad's boats back in the mid to late seventies. Used it on his cars, too. I haven't used it since about 1983 or so, so I'm really looking forward to getting the two tins I just ordered from Rick.

Yes, you are correct on all counts. Unfortunately the #16 is selling for a bit more $ now, and I missed out on those great $6 prices. :(

I wonder how many Rick has in stock?

I got 10 for $4/tin from the seller. Sorry. :p

Still definitely worth the $13/tin though! The stuff lasts forever in the tin, you only have to use a miniscule amount per car, its easy to use (if done properly), looks good and lasts long. What more can you ask for? Other high quality Meg's LSP are always >$13 anyway, $13 is definitely reasonable for this Meg's powerhouse.

Well, I tried my Collinite 915 yesterday.

The more LSP's that I continue to try, the more products I find that seem to be the same.

As I was using the 915 I kept saying to myself how very similar this was to FK 1000p! It comes in a metal jar, it looks similar in the jar, it applies very similar, it removes similar, and it sure as heck smells similar (solvent smell).

And guess what else? The looks are pretty similar too. Perhaps the 915 has slightly more depth, but its hard to say for sure since I was not doing a direct comparison from panel to panel.

915 and FK 1000p also come off similarly, though FK does come off slightly easier.

Will see how it holds up in terms of longevity and ability to shed dirt/grime, but FK 1000p is already quite good at that.

Again, I don't want to jump to conclusions so early, but at this point I feel like I basically have two tubs of FK 1000p (or two tubs of 915?). ;)

Strange how some people say their 915 smells like solvent. Mine smells like coconut. 1000P and 476S smell like solvent (actually I think 476S smells like an old tackle box).

I think 476S smells kind of like RAID

845 Smells along those lines as well.

You're not the first person so say that :D

I myself sorta *like* the chemical-plant smell of the Collinites :D
