Collinite V.O.C. Info Update

Livin' the good life
I inquired about V.O.C. regs & comparisons of #476s, #885, and #915 and received this response from Mike Oczkowski, Collinite Customer Service. Some comments reflect typical mfg bias but some useful information here:

"Because of the new VOC regulations we are going to have to tinker with of formulations. The only problem we might have is that the product might take a little longer to set up or dry, other than that the product will still outshine and protect better that other waxes.

I would recommend stocking up to be on the safe side. With the cold weather upon us, I recommend storing the product inside at room temperature."

"The #476s is supposed to be hard, sometimes they do come out a little on the soft side, but you would prefer it to be hard. The main thing is that all you need to protect the car is a thin layer of wax, you do not have to glob it on. If the water is beating up on the finish and running off while you are driving everything is fine.

The #476s and #885 are the exact same product, just a different size and lithographed can. The #915 basically comes from the some formula as the #476s & #885 but is has approximately 24% more carnauba wax and contains a coconut fragrance.

Appearance wise there isn't a major difference between
the #915 & #476s. I usually tell people the purchase the #476s to save money and still get a great car wax.

I do not have the carnauba % of these products available."

Thanks for the info. Interesting that #476s and #885 are the same, as #885 is sold as boat wax. Also, interesting is the boat wax is the best deal, because usually everything to do with boats is more expensive.

I ordered 2 cans of #885 from Aratari today. He also had a huge can of $476s on his truck. I didn't get a chance to ask about it as I was in a hurry, but it looked bigger than the can that 915 comes in. I might just buy him out of all his Collinite if the company is saying stock up.

CHEAP COLLINITE!

Try this for #885 FleetWax http://www.shipstore.com/ss/html/CLT/CLT885.html

They have a lot of it and are located in upstate NY. The 885 tin is taller than 476, and has a smaller diameter opening which could make it a bit more difficult to get on the apllicator depending on your method of use. Been using 885 five years. Latched onto it from a boating publication.

fleetwax #995 for $12.95 sounds like a great deal.

What do they charge for shipping? Fixed price or charge actual UPS shipping charges for ZIP code-to-ZIP code.

If the formula is changing (for the better? for the worse?) stocking-up sounds like a real good idea.

Yup, $ 12.95 is a very good price. I do not recall what their shipping is. I inquired once, and do not buy there since I get product direct from plant. I am only and hour away. We buy a case and split it up among users.

Stocking Up?

It could be a good idea. It is going to take a some time to go through a 12oz. can(s). I can't see a whole lot of difference between the old and the new. Wax content will be the same. The solvent content will be changed which should only affect set up time as mentioned. That should be a minimal concern. IMO

Who knows? Maybe Collinite has a lot of product on the shelf and need to decrease inventory. Hence, the recommendation to stock up. There will be a "sell off" period where old product can be sold even though new VOC regs are in effect. That may be the time to stock up if they have excess. Maybe a "VOC Sale"? I do not know the particulars on the time frame.

I bought a case of 476S and the IW 845. At my age that would equate to a "lifetime" supply. :)

Based on my current usage (3x layers & the wax in the tin looks unused) I'd say my current tin of $476s and perhaps one or two tins of #476s or #885 will last me as long as I care to use them .... aka .... lifetime supply.
