cold weather is coming, what do you do

I would say this maybe more for fixed shops, but who knows. I have put it a bit of time over the summer finding a couple of wholsale accounts that do a decent volume to get things steady through the cold weather. One is a Auto wholesaler and the other is a used import lot http://carterandanderson.com/carsforsale.html Ive done everything on there lot. The wholesaler I work with, does a little bit of everything and as you can see, the lot does higher end used car sales. Both pay well, not retail but at approx 20% savings, but there is an endless supply of cars and they both understand that retail comes first, so I am never rushed to turn down money. I do not know if I will feel the same about wholesale work in 2 or 3 years but as a newer business it is great to have a couple of good relationships like these to keep what can be at times a hit or miss market, Hitting.

what are some of the ways that others prepare for winter?

Clay, yours sounds like a good plan for a fixed shop location.

Since I am a mobile detailing business, I do the complete opposite. I have always used the coldest months (January & February) to go out there and market to more and more high end retail customers. That includes doing things to directly contact many of the professional people in the area including doctors, lawyers, etc and the owners of small businesses. It is a know fact that these are the people who can afford to pay the higher retail prices and it made no sense to me to do things to settle for less going wholesale.

The way I figure it, I stay busy the rest of the year and by the winter I am ready for a break in the action. Like I said, that is when I get to work doing other things to go after more new clients for the spring. Of course, even a fixed shop would benefit from marketing to higher end retail clients.

Why pay someone else the 20%, by working wholesale, just to stay busy during the winter? When you can take in more than the 20% for each retail customer serviced during the rest of the year. Why not use the winter, to prepare for the rest of the year?

Yup, same here.

I'm using the quieter time I've got now and in the next few months to do all those jobs I don't get the chance to do during the winter.

Servicing the generator, making sure the van works ok, doing a new pricelist, setting targets for the year ahead, updating website, doing marketing plans.
