Cobalt SS vs. WRX?? Which one to buy

correct (though I heard 265?).

However the WRX is 300 lbs heavier and has 15lbs of torque less... :(

It's actually 267 Todd. When I was detailing in Canada for Subaru, our Subie mechanic clarified that the actual horsepower rating is 267. :bigups

we aren't going top fight about 2 Hp are we?

as I am sure some dyno @265, some dyno @267, some between, some less, some more?

did your mechanic pull the engine and throw in on the dyno?

if not then who care what he sayed?

Although I hate to agree with big jim. The dyno doesnt make up for the drive train slack. Flywheel HP is Different from WHP, but when you rate 2 cars at the rear wheels on the dyno the numbers speak.

I just check the Subie website and all American litature that I have (M/T, RandT, CandD) and they all claim 265. Maybe its slightly different mapping for the US market?

I'm only going by the marketing.

But in the end it doesn't matter because the Cobalt is still faster (even with 5-7 less horsepower). (Because it has 14.01-14.32 more pound-feet of torque and weights 312-317 lbs less ;) )

Go EURO. Much better reputation.

The closest Euro car is the Cobalt, no? It has some Holden/Vauxhaul in it somewhere... :D

Go Subie cause it just blings with NAWZ and BOOST.

i think the numbers here are useless. The car will have to be driven perfectly in order to achieve those numbers.

Take them both for a drive. Thats ultimately where the decision will be made.

Its the car I cant find in the bone yard that strikes my intrest. The GM line keeps the bone yards in business. Just the truth ! Next time your out driving around count how many American cars you see vs. ? Actully most american car are manufactured where? The GTO came back after a couple of decades from Austrailia. From a 1970 goat powerhouse to a sheet metal disaster. Now you just have to admire the one who wants to restore history. I have to say in 2 notes,

When I see a 70 LS6 Chevelle 454. I get a bonner for sure, but what went into that car comes to mind next. Thats a HOBBY noy practicality ! Deffinetly not a daily driver either.

I would fully agree. They have professional drivers driving the cobalt and WRX at the track. I all comes down to who is behind the wheel that wins races, gets certain times in the 1/4, etc.

Driving both will tell you which is for you. None of us can make that decision, as we all have our own individual likes, dislikes and driving habits.

In the end I will probably get the Sub because it does have AWD and I don't know if I can get over FWD. But I still need to test them first ;)

GM has made improvements to the 08+ SS to reduce the torque steer, so you may be surprised once you actually drive it.

Todd, it sounds like mentally you've decided. I'd still urge you to drive them with an open mind. I personally think the Cobalt will be a better drive (for you), but that remains to be seen.

The opinions about american cars expressed by some in this thread are ridiculous. Stop molesting dashboards and start driving!

Supposedly the WRX has crappy paint.....if we use the logic of the dashboard molesters, then the entire car is crap, right? Better call the WRC and let them know....

Wake up.

No doubt there is some incredibly biased opinions here. I would understand a biased opinion from a former WRX owner staying with what works for them. For everyone else, like you said get out and start driving!!

I would really like to get a hold of one of these SS cars and go and run a new G37,Stang,SRT8,S2000.

Todd,

If it were ME and MY money......I'd get the Cobalt SS and be done with it. I'd love to trade my DD Focus on a Cobalt SS, but I dont want payments. The Subarus are cool, but I dont think they're ME, ya know.

FWIW, I think it was MotorTrend that has all the cars on the cover and tested them based on price class...

The Cobalt SS destroyed (3 seconds or more) the G37...
