Cobalt SS vs. WRX?? Which one to buy

I'd vote for the wrx. Especially the 2009 wrx with increased in power, and ton's of potentials. I'd check out NASIOC.COM, its a subaru forum where you can find out all the good / bad things about the wrx.

From my experience ( I have an 03), the wrx has a glass tranny, so if you have on doing ALOT of "very spirited driving" I would think twice and go straight for the STi or even an EVO. But if you want something thats a DD with good power and great handling and occasional "spirited driving" the wrx is more than enough car.

Bad thing about a subaru besides the tranny (again this was the issue with previous wrx models, not sure how the new ones are) is that people often mistake it for a diesel (at least that what mines get mistaken for)

The SS on the other, is... well ehh. Im biased, as I hate the SS or the neon SRT4, I think these cars are GM's way of trying to get a piece of the pie ( the tuner world) without really thinking about it. I'm look at the styling, its ugly as hell and makes it more ridiculous with the stupid looking wing that simply does not flow the body lines.

But one good note for the SS, a few years back on the speed channel they did a challenge, and took the SS and other "tuner" cars and had "tuners" built them for racing specs, the SS of course was backed my GM while the others car were done with private tune shops. The SS won the challenge, but thats after ever piece of the ecotec motor was re-vamp.

My vote, wrx, its what makes a subaru a subaru.

If that isnt good enough check out this video, This should make you wanna buy a SUBARU

I understand what you are saying, but it seems (atleast in 09) that the Cobalt SS is just the better car, regardless of the name on the badge. It is faster, handles better, etc then the WRX.

Cobalt SS,

The engine makes a lusty 260 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque and in the Cobalt SS will provide sub-6-second 0-60-mph acceleration times.

Chevy hasn't released details on the '09 Cobalt SS Sedan, but expect the sticker to match that of the coupe, which will start at just under $23,000.

Edmunds online !

WRX 09,

The 2009 WRX is expected September 2008.

The tweaked 09 WRX will have a larger turbo with more boost, and an easier flowing catalytic converter, making 265horsepower@6000rpm and 244 ft torque @4000rpm, up from 224hp@5200rpm, 226torque@2800rpm. WRX sedan 9J0 $24,995 +$695 = $25,690 $23,617 +$695 = $24,312

Edmunds online !

The STI version bost over 300 HP.

If you were debating between the 08 WRX and the Cobalt this would be a different story. But go with the 09 WRX. Hands Down. The reviews of this car are incredible. Its running 0-60 and 1/4mi times faster than the STI. Everything is improved over last years model.

AWD FTW!

Torque Steer FTL!

At the end of the day, the cobalt is still P.O.S Chevy. My friend had an 07 SS Supercharged and the build quality was just absolutely horrible.

and btw. The Cobalt is most definitely not faster than the 09 WRX.

Sorry dude but you are wrong, perhaps you should research before you make statements?

Every test (MT, RT, CD) has had the Cobalt as the faster, better handling car. The only categroies the 09 WRX wins is it does have 5 more horsepower (but has to carry 300 extra pounds) and it will win out of the gate, benefit of AWD.

No I didn't :(

But I did test another C5 Z06, this one with 447 hp at the rear wheels and wheelspin at the top of second ;) :D

Intresting about the Cobalt SS from RandT.

"For all those who have said, "I'd buy an American car if they made one that could compete with teh Europeans and Japanese," Chevy is calling your bluff. Because the Cobalt SS doesn't just compete with the forgien cars, it eats them. It is the hottest-performaning sports compact you can buy in the US for under 30,000."

In my opinion the WRX is the clear winner in this case, cobalt SS vs WRX. Subie offers AWD in which I could find usefull in many situations (Winter). Plus it out powers it by almost 10 HP. Granted its a couple of thousand more, but thats not alot to pay for an all season car as the cobalt sits still in the snow.

In the styling dept. The cobalt SS still looks plastic to me. Its unchanged, and resembles the regular cobalt minus the wing. The WRX on the other hand looks more refined. a sedan on steroids.

If this were my choice Id go WRX !

The EVO X I think is even better looking, and can match the power of the WRX. also offers AWD.

The EVO X

Clearly better looking. More aggressive.

This would be my choice after MODS !

WE ARE TALKING 09 RIGHT ? I saw you posted stats on the 08 vs.

I like the Evo kind of, but performance wise it was FAR off the pace of the Cobalt SS.. Let alone slower cars such as the WRX and Speed3

That Stats are from the '09. The '08 WRX only had 235 horsepower (maybe less?)

Sounds like youve made your mind up. Enjoy your Cobalt it is a pretty rad ride indeed.

Nah, I haven't made up my mind one bit. I think it will come down to a test drive. The last people I want to impress are the kids who think nitrous is NAWZ (not saying this is you) and are telling me that the Subaru is faster because its not a Chevy.

Chevy has a winner on its hands and who would have thought that it would even (ever) compete against the Subaru. I am only trying to defend the facts here.

In the end I will probably get the Sub because it does have AWD and I don't know if I can get over FWD. But I still need to test them first ;)

Agreed. Im not pushing the Subie I dont even own one. I simply think its better thought out, and it all comes down to AWD for me. Its practical. Bottom line.

No im not telling you the Subie is faster because it not a Chevy. It was in print in car and driver. Im not here to sell you a car for sure. I just thought it would be fun to pull a few stats on all the tuner cars, and post them to aid you in your choice thats all. Drive them like you stole um ! Have fun !

In what year did WRX enter the market, not rally cross. The mass market ? Now what year did the Cobalt SS come into the market ? The Neon went through 6 ? years of disgrace before they worked out the bugs, and offered an SRT 4 version.

Now im true AMERICAN no doubt, but seem to me that the US takes years to refine ANYTHING.

well the impreza has been around since the early 90s. the WRX entered the US market in 2001 with the 02 "bugeye" wrx. the STI model followed in 04.
