CMC Detailing-VW GTI repaint nightmare

Recently I was contacted by a member of a local forum to detail his car, a repainted Anniversary Edition Volkswagen GTI. I felt very privileged to be asked to do this since he lives 2.5 hours away and would be leaving the car with me for several days. I appreciate the trust he had in leaving his baby in my care! I worked on this car in the evenings after my full time job in order to get it done and delivered on time.

The only thing I knew of this car was that the client said it was "hazy in some areas" due to poor finishing by the painter. I figured "hazy" meant I'd be dealing with unfinished sanding marks, but I didn't realize "in some areas" meant everywhere that wasn't glass, wheels or rubber. :faint2:

The first thing I noticed when the car was dropped off was buffer trails. Tons of them, everywhere. The painter must have thought leaving these behind was some kind of signature, because he covered the car in them like it was his job.

Just for good measure he threw in some deep swirls for fun. These were from the driver's rear quarter.

Moving on, it was easy to see this finish was in pretty rough shape for one that had been recently painted.

These sanding scratches were the lightest on the car, so they cleaned up easily.

These on the other hand were the worst...

The amount of swirls was surprising as well.

In case anyone was wondering how messy my garage really is...

I apologize for the lack of good sun shots, since it was raining the day he picked up. But I thought some of these were worth snapping.

Car came out looking great. I love GTIs.

Thanks Dan, I'm a fan of them too. I probably would have bought one instead of a Mazda3 but my wife and son both vetoed the car. Some people have no taste!

Excellent work Mike! I didn't see the process though.

The paint job itself looks good - did it?

Thank you very much Thomas. Sorry, the process just slipped my mind, it was late when I posted last night!

The car was compounded with Scholls S3 Gold on MF cutting pads (Meguiar's 6.5" on Dynabrade/849x, Meg's 5.5" on GGDA and OPT 4" pads on Meguiars G110v2) and polished with HD Polish on green B&S pads. LSP used was DG105.

nice work mike!!

Thanks buddy!

Thomas, I forgot to answer the second part of your question...the paintjob itself was pretty good. No excessive OP, only 2 runs that I could find (one on the edge of the hatch and one on the edge of the passenger door.) and no nibs in the paint.

Looking good there neighbor down south, you finished what the painter started. BTW - had a GTI for 4 years, I was lucky in that mine didn't have any "issues" but I was nervous as a whore in church after the warranty ran out. We bought our daughter a Mazda 3 a couple years ago, and after having both around to detail and drive, I'd say you came out way ahead. I recently traded the GTI for a Ford Taurus, I know - that's a leap worthy of Evil Kneivel, but let me just say, it fits my bad back MUCH better and the family LOVES it.

Thanks Jimmy! I've been loving the Mazda3, but I've always been a eurosnob at heart and the GTI is THE granddaddy of all "hot hatches" ...An 04 R32 would be a dream car of mine, and if Volvo ever decides to sell that Polestar C30, I'll sell a kidney to buy one. ;)

You could also just get an HPA tuned R32.

0-60 = 3.2 sec

11.8 to 1/4 mile
