Clear Coats, Sense of False Security

Just One More Coat
I have to wonder if some people think that since their cars have a clear coats on them, there is no need for regular polishing or waxing.

I've read on other forums where some believe this, that the CC takes care of the paint protection and less to no maintenance is required.

Its obvious to me in the way some cars look.

What do you think are some people relying on the CC to much?

Dave ..a lot of this misinformation actually comes from the salesmen at the dealers when they sell the cars and believe it or not it comes from the paint mfgs. If you have some time and need a good laugh, call PPG or Dupont or Sikkens and talk to some of their customer service reps.. play dumb and you'll get a good laugh ...:)

Its quite unfortunate that this is how it is, some of the cars that I have worked on are trashed for lack of maintenance, and they wonder why?

I called PPG and one guy told me their clearcoat didn't need wax or polishing for 6 years

I'm always amazed to hear that rumor still goes around. Ignorance really is bliss.

Repeatedly I see people saying, "My car has nice black paint with a clear coat added on top for greater protection." Some people will even tell you they added a clear coat to make the paint more durable. :bubba

If people saw what base cot looks like before its cleared, they would probably understand the difference.

While B/C is more durable, watching it fail is truly sad, far worse than single stage and far more dramatic in its appearance. Remember lacquer check or chalky enamel. At least you could still make something out of those. Watch a B/C take on those clouds and start peeling off and you'll feel the sadness.

I had a car over the holidays that had CC peeling and she asked if I could do anything...my answer was yes about two years ago...lucky for her its only on the roof so I said get the car repainted in that area before it starts to spread farther...I told her to let me detail the good painted areas then have the roof repainted this way the shop can match the color better...she said that she would get back to me like I was telling her a lie

Living in Northern Wisconsin and bordering Upper Michigan you would be amazed how many of the elderly believe there is no need to wax clear coat, they truly believe it is a lasting no touch maintenance paint and shine will last forevever, many of the dealers and some body shops promote this thinking but they themselves wax their vehicles. Say what you like but it is true. GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Some time back I posted about a high end body shop making what I felt was one of the most ridiculous comments I have heard about car care.
He was quoted in our newspaper(?) as part of an article on car washing and waxing. The entire article was full of misinformation, but that's not uncommon for our paper.
His comments:
"As far as I'm concerned, you might as well pour a gallon of milk over your car. The new paint and clear coats on cars now don't even need to be waxed," said Kent xxxxxxx, owner of xxxxxxx Auto Body West in Des Moines.

He suggests buying a mild rubbing compound made for cars at any auto parts or discount store and using that in place of wax, simply for cleaning off difficult dirt and spots.
It is pretty easy to see why people get confused about how to take care of their vehicles finish.

She didn't want to hear repaint.

She also didn't like the idea of having it polished because a body shop can easily match it, anyway. Paint is paint.

Can't you just put some more of that clear stuff on it?

If she actually shops around, she will realize your advice is correct. If she doesn't believe the next few sources she tries, then she is one you'll never reach. Frustrating if you think too much about it

In this case clear coat failure could have been a problem but lack of maintenance was also very clear to me...I could careless about the car, why? Because its those jobs that are time consuming and you can't seem to charge enough to make you feel like you come out on it,

LOL....some people really are ...well i cant think of any fitting word to express the stupidity of people who say and believe some of the quotes and stories you guys have posted( i mean the people saying them are stupid, not you guys for posting it)
a lot of the idiot way of thinking comes from dealers who feed lines to the customers. many dealers say they have a special wax that lasts a whole year and thats the only place people will get their cars waxed because of the comment. i think the PPG guy comment was the funniest , but hte milk one was a close second hahaha. these are people who SHOULD know something about paint care, clear coat is just unpigmented paint for the most part...

some car salesman sold my mom on a $400 "paint treatment" so that her car wouldnt need to polished or waxed for 2 years.

one of my friends has a new M5. i think he paint over a grand to get his car "simonized" and he said it was under warranty against love bug damage for X months blah blah blah....i couldnt figure it out until i came across Simonize waxes online and i realized how bad they screwed him
