clear coat question

What will it look like if the clear coat is missing. The reason I am asking is because I have a bright yellow cougar and I have a mark (really small like a stone chip) that is a slightly different color than the car but I cannot get it off with wax or scrubbing. I was just wondering if maybe it was a stone that just took the clear coat off. Thanks for your help.

Exposed basecoat will typically have little to no gloss compared to cleared areas and won't get any depth or shine if you try to polish or wax it.

You'll normally be able to feel and/or see the edges or the surrounding clearcoat.

PC.

Is it "lighter"? I've accidentally wetsanded through clearcoat on some metallic finishes (like peuter, and silver) and it left a spot lighter than the rest of the paint (in my situation, about a thumb print size). That there teaches you to be more careful trying to wetsand out scratches, and to just use touchup paint more even if it woun't turn out perfect. :grinno:
