Cleaning Wheels: How To Seal & Protect ??

HondaMan

2004 Civic EX magnesium
I want to just clean my wheels today on my Civic....I remember someone mentioning using AIO or SG after they were hit by the cleaner, clayed, etc.

Has anyone used that combo? Should I use both or just one?

Also, if I'm just looking to "coat" the wheels to make it easier to clean future brake dust, dirt, grease etc, is there other stuff I can use or are acryllics the only/best way to go on wheels? I have PB EX-P (don't want to use PB PP because that's just a cleaner/polisher, right?) and GlanzWax.

I just want to put a coating down that the gunk will stick to and make future cleanings alot easier.

I personally use AIO followed by UPP ... however, from what I have read here I think SG would work great also. The "wax" products will not hold up as long.
It is great to be able to clean your wheels (after a sealant has been applied) using just car wash shampoo or Poorboys Spray and Wipe.

AIO works well for me and I've read a lot of posts from people that are happy with AIO + SG. I'm sure that EX-P would work well too. The nice thing about AIO is that it does have some cleaining ability - it will remove a lot of baked on brakedust. Maybe use PP before EX-P if you want to do a Poorboy's only detail.

I strongly recommend using your old clay to clean your wheels before using a sealant on them.

Yes, I use my old clay bits to clean the wheel...first I wash and rinse, then I let it dry and hit it with A2Z Eagle 1....then clay any remaining dirt, and then I'll use the PB EX-P. I'll probably drop the PP since I am claying away the dirt.

Do you folks go "deep" into the wheel or just hit the visible parts of the wheel going in a few inches? If one wants to clean the inside part of the wheel you need to stick a hand/brush pretty far back; I don't know how one would apply sealant and clean it there unless you removed the wheels.

I'm probably just gonna hit the main outside part of the wheel and the easily accessible parts.

Well, I put the EX-P on the wheels and let it stay 2 hours, well past the 30-60 minutes it says on the bottle...I sure hope it "took" to the wheels covering, because it is coming off REALLY EASY, not at all like when I had to take it off the car and use a spritz bottle.

I sure hope I'm not wiping it all off. They're regular Honda Civic 2004 wheels but they might be aluminum with some slick metal coating. Not sure. Definitely not custom wheels or anything.

I guess when I clean the wheels in a few weeks I'll be able to tell then if I'm wiping it off a layer of sealant or the wheel itself.
