Cleaning Rims

It seems most autopians here seal or wax thier rims. I have never done this. I use A2Z or Megs Hot Rims on the daily drivers at every wash.(usually once a week) They get squeeky clean and shine well. i have never had a problem. Is this something that I shouldn't be doing?

It's something that's really just unnecessary.

You should really just buy another wash mit, and use it for wheels. After you've washed the paint, use the remaining shampoo in your bucket to wash the wheels. Not only is it much easier, but your wheels actually have something protecting them.

Most automotive stuff is tougher than we might give it credit for, including wheels. So I dunno if you'll ever have a real problem.

But I look at it this way- whether chrome/painted (including cleared)/polished/whatever, if it were something *other* than a wheel, how would you treat it? I'd wax/seal it. So I do the same thing with the wheels. Especially since they take so much use/abuse. And I'm just not a big fan of using a strong cleaner all the time on *anything*, especially something that doesn't have any protection on it. And most stuff looks better with some nice LSP on it than it does merely "clean" ;)

A2Z is pretty good stuff, but it is a bit harsh to use weekly if not needed. Once you have your rims clean, throw on a coat of AIO and then a few coats of SG (any good sealer will work, and many love Collinite 845). Then when you wash your car the wheels will clean up nicely with just your car wash mix.

An added bonus is your wheels will not only look better, but will stay cleaner longer because the brake dust and road grime won't be as prone to stick.

Two sealers that have worked well for me are AIO/SG and the new Poorboy's wheel sealant.

IMO using a wheel cleaner at every wash is a huge waste of time and product.

Seal them and just use leftover wash solution to wash them. With sealant on them, they will come clean easily.

It's really hard to say, since there are just *so* many variables. My wife and I don't drive all that much now that we're retired, but 2-4 layers of KSG (washed with just regular car wash) last for a few months on our vehicles. Our winter wheels are still beading pretty well with nothing but washes since I mounted them in December. And it's easy to do a quick (gentle) claying of the easy to reach areas and apply a little more sealant whenever you're doing the rest of the car.

My wheels still sheet water very well, and the brake dust wipes right off. I have UPPx2 and #16x2 on them now. I applied UPPx2 and #16 in November, and added another coat of #16 in late January.

Exactly what I do.

I'm told that Eagle One A2Z have changed there forumula and its now less acidic?

Like others who have answered I use a polymer (Zoopseal) selant to protect wheels and use car wash solution to maintain them
