Cleaning paint/industrial protective coating out of the wheel wells?

New member
I have a new customer to detail today and he was telling me that he works for a company that does some sort of protective coating. He told me his driver spilled some on the highway and his wife drove through the mess and the front wheel wells are coated with this substance.

What is the best way to get something like this cleaned out? I thought about some sort of laquer thinner or mineral spirits and of course clay the exterior. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I did the SUV over this last summer and I used Laqauer thinner on most all the car. It works great in the wheel wells, but do not use on it any of the plastic on the outside of the car it will eat the finish off.

Here is the link with the before and after pics. Also depending on how bad the overspray is on the paint. The clay might not be strong enough to take it off, its at least worth a try. I explained what I did in this thread....Good Luck!

Beemerboy: Yeah that's what I was thinking to. He was telling me that there is some splatter on the exterior of the car on the on the lower kick panels, so I hope the clay will work on that. As a side note the substance is no more than 2 days old.

brwill: I have seen those wipes that Sprayway makes and I am kicking myself for not ordering them a month or so back. Unfortunately I need them today and I can't wait for shipping. Thanks though!
 
I used the LT on the painted surface but you have to do this at the wash stages. Put some on a rag wipe area it shoud come right off, then have a bucket with soap water wash off rigth away then rince right after. I worked in 12 x 12 inch areas. Also start with a small area to see how the paint reacts. The clear coat will look a bit dull at first but that will buff rigth out again try a small area start to finish to just make sure.

Beware of using something like a paint remover on car paint because it could remove the paint from the car. Lacquer thinner is usually safe to use on today's basecoat/clearcoat finishes. Is it possible to talk to a representitive of the company that makes the protective coating? They may have a solvent that will remove the coating and not harm the paint.
Another product that may work is Goof-Off or lighter fluid ... as always try a small area first.
Let us know how it comes out :)
 
If you have access to heat: a steamer used along with the wide variety of solvents, may help removal go by faster
 
Well, It went very well getting the coating off. For the wheel wells I used LT on a shop towel and wiped it over a couple times letting it sit a few minutes. Then, I attempted to continued rubbing it off, but no such luck. So, I used a plastic scraper and finished it off with a wipe down of LT. I clayed the paint and it came off with ease. VIOLA! :dancin
