Cleaner wax vs. wax

I got meguiars clay kit and it came with a cleaner wax. What is the difference between a wax like nxt gen spray and the cleaner wax?

Nothing, they will both stain your trim equally badly.

Seriously though...wait, that was serious, well, anyway, the NXT Spray Wax is just a booster, and really doesn't work as a stand alone. If you're trying to compare the NXT Liquid to the Meg's Cleaner Wax, the Cleaner Wax has a lot more abrasives and chemical cleaners in it than NXT does. I used to swear by the Meg's cleaner waxes in the old days (the #6 Mirror Glaze and the A-12 red bottle OTC).

LMAO

Mike, make up your mind will ya??

Cleaner waxes promise to clean and protect. And they do! For about 1 week in the sun (at least the Megs #6). One product, one purpose. You could use it as its a freebie, or you could give it to the kid down the block......

I think cleaner waxes have their place as long as you understand that they don't last as long as a sealant or good wax. I use it to prep my paint if polishing isn't necessary.

So I use the cleaner wax before the nxt spray wax?

How often should I use the cleaner wax because it has abrasives?

I think it's safe to say you can use the cleanerwax as often as you like, it's a chemical cleaner. And then I would recommend NXT 2.0 instead of the spray wax. Much better protection and looks, and the work is about the same. It even has some cleaners in it.

The cleaner wax doesn't have a huge amount of abrasives. As has been discussed many times before, you could do worse than to use a cleaner wax regularly and do nothing else.

The spray wax is meant to “freshen up the finish in between regular waxing. So whether you’re using the cleaner wax or a straight wax you would still use the spray wax “occasionally, more often than wax, less often than QD.

my take on it is a clean wax is pretty good at cleaning and protection, it's a compromise between the two. but it you want the best cleaning ability and the best protection you need a poduct that specifically does one of the two.

'I do a cleaner wax (just because I have like 2 cans and 2 bottles of it I got free) and then I do a wax on top of that. Read the can and it will tell you the difference ;). It\'s supposed to help CLEAN the surface, before the wax is applied, but the Megs stuff is supposed to be a dual purpose thing for people that don\'t get deep into detailing.'

Most cars can be cleaned up very well with a cleaner wax.If you follow with a straight wax , you will have a great finish. Some people will use 15 steps, when 2 or 3 steps will work just fine.

Wait, I thought the nxt gen spray wax was a synthetic wax which meant that it shouldn't be overused because it can ruin the paint. I thought I read it somewhere in the guide to detailing. Is any of that correct?

I always take a bottle of cleaner wax on any long trips with me for quick touch ups of road tar, bird crap and anything else bad that comes my way. I have a good QD and cleaner wax and can handle most quick cleanups.

Yes, it's synthetic. No, it can't hurt your paint.

just curious, what products do you carry with you? btw i bought some of the 36oz spray bottles from autogeek, they are shorter than others so they take up less space when used for trips. have my filled with onr qd.

I carry a bottle of Megs #6, spray bottle of PB S&W, sometimes a small BS Remover (now discontinued), IG aerosol, and 6-10 mf towels. This and a quart of oil all fit into a very small Rubbermaid container.

That small bottle of cleaner wax is perfect for under hood and trunk painted areas as well as door jams.
