cleaner wax before or after

I want to clean my van up very soon. It is a dark green metallic. I have Meguiar's clean wax paste and the polish I have is Nu Finsh and the wax I have is Prestone high protection wax. I am not sure which one I will use. If I can I want to buy something else not sure what. So should I use the cleaner wax 1st then the other or after the wax or polish. I dont have a clay bar so that is out of the question. thanks

I'm running out the door so I can't respond back right away, but my question is why is claying out of the question?

I'll join Troy is asking...why is clay out of the question. If you have a WM near there are usually several boxes of Meguiar's and Mother's clay bar kits to choose from.

For a one-step, the Meguiar's Cleaner Wax would be fine or the Nu-Finish which is also considered a one-step product. Don't expect any paint correction with either product, other than some mild oxidation. Working from memory, the Nu-Finish had a much stronger chemical smell than the Meguiar's.

I would like to buy some more wax or polish if I am able to this weekend that is better than what I have. If I am able to buy that I can't get the clay bar. I dont have enough Nu Finish to do the whole van.In cosumer reports wax, polish test from 2000 they had Nu Finsh(paste) ranked # 3 and #8 liquid. Both had very good durabilty. With birthdays, school, etc coming up I cant get things I want too,and working part time and having kids it is hard to buy all of the things I need to take care of the van.thanks

I think he meant he does not have any clay, with what you got i would say meq. cleaner wax first then you can put your prestone wax on it if you like. Good luck dude.

I don't know much about the testing environment that CR went through, but I don't put too much on their findings. That said, Nu-Finish should work well enough in your situation. Just consider this a test bed and use up your remaining Nu-Finish and finish off with the Meguiar's Cleaner Wax.

I see where you are coming from on the limited funds. No big deal. Save your money now and use what you have and when you can pick up some clay. It will help you results considerably.

That plan would work as well.

Look into Duragloss 501, locally can be picked up at Napa and Carquest. It is a great cleaner/sealant. I would still wash, clay, then use DG 501 and forget Nu Finish and Prestone Wax

A clean smooth surface is pretty essential to good paint care. If your paint is rough at all to the touch I would spend your money on some clay and use up what you have as far as wax or sealant goes. That's if you're on a tight budget.

I would do the following:
wash
clay
cleaner wax
prestone wax

The reason I would follow this order is imho surface preparation is the key to the end result. It does not matter to me what boutique wax a person might have. Without taking the necessary step prior to waxing, you will not achieve the optimum results.

So purchase a clay kit, use up what you have as far as waxes are concerned. You will be very pleased with your results.

Thanks guys for the respones. I just went out to the van and wiped it off with my car duster. It feels pretty much smooth,a few bumps in a spot or 2.

Tell me how far (how much work) you are wanting to do on the van. That will help determine my suggestions and the products.

For example, is this what you plan on doing?

Wash
Clay
polish
wax/seal

and all by hand?

If so, I have an idea. If you want to discuss that further in private, PM me. I thought by putting that question out here, it might help others determine some suggestions as far as the actual work goes.

Everything will be by hand. I have a 10" polisher that i have used a few times it's not much i know. I want it to look the best that it can and have very good protection,it stays outside all the time. Thanks

I agree with this plan, Just the other day I was helping a friend with polishing his wifes brown Dodge Neon. It started as just a brown car but we noticed that after claying the car (before any polish or wax was applied) the just brown paint had become a brilliant display of the mettallic in the paint. this only looked better as polish and wax were applied.
