Clean Edge Detailed: '71 Sting Ray

Sorry, if this has been addressed, I'll be searching the archives too but...

Is it ok to use those 'laser'(or whatever) touchless carwashes? You know, the automatic ones that are usually at gas stations? Does the water pressure they use to spray the car down take off the wax/Zaino?

Normally, I would hand wash and wax my car, but sometimes you want to get it done quickly.

Thanks,

Steve

I always use it during winter time whenever it's too cold for me to hand wash my car (or when I don't have enough time to wash my car)..it's ok..for me, it doesn't seem to take away the Klasse ..still beading like crazy :)

I understand other members will tell you to look for hand wash service..yes, if you can hand wash it or have others hand wash it for you that's better and cleaner..that's why I can't wait for spring to come :)

Heres what I do in the winter, go to the spray bay at a non peak time with your buckets, soap and wash mitt/towel. Use one rinse cycle to wet the car and fill the bucket, then hand wash it and rinse it. While your drying the car the wheels should drip dry, dress them and then vacum and clean the windows. You'll be there for a while but it's a good way to keep p with your car in the winter.

The thing with hand wash places is I have a hard time trusting that they won't make my car a swirl showcase. Black is tough to keep swirl free.

Supposedly, car soap won't remove Zaino, but something like Dawn will. I wonder what the touchless carwashes use for soap.

Thanks for the info guys,

Steve

oops, my bad...

So how do you get Zaino off? Claying?

Does that mean it's safe to use a touchless carwash and that it won't strip off the Zaino?

Sean

I don't think the car wash will strip off Zaino nor will clay..

you can strip of sealants, polymer and wax by using polish or cleaner...

Well this was a real treat! A guy was referred to me from someone that had seen my work so after we finally touched base, he told me he had a corvette that was in DESPERATE need of a good detail. He explained the car had been repainted 3 times and the last time left it swirled beyond belief to the point where some of the paint was actually dull, literally dull. On top of that there were still LOTS of wet sanding marks all over the place. I asked him to bring the car over so I could see just how bad it was because I didn't want him spending money with me if it was beyond repair.

So he came by and sure enough, it was every bit as bad as he said it was. I decided to try a little test spot to see how much correction I could get and happily the test spot came out pretty good so he wanted me to go ahead with the detail. So a couple weeks later when a weekend was FINALLY free, he brought the car over. He said I could take all the time I needed so that was a good thing because like a lot of detailers I'm a "little" OCD when it comes to how I want the car to look when it's finished, like most of you I'm sure.

Over the next several days I just really took my time polishing out as much as I could. I even cleaned up the engine bay a little bit which he didn't ask me to do but you know, if it's dirty I need to clean it. This was NOT an easy detail as there were SO MANY scratches it just never ended. I used orange lc pads and ccs pads which I have decided I do not like at all. Also used some white lc pads too. I used Menzerna SIP and 106FF for the polishing followed by a couple coats of Danase Wet Glaze and Ultima Paint Guard Plus for the sealant.

I finally finished the car on Saturday and the gentlemen and his son, who owns the car, came to pick her up. We stood at my garage door and when the door when up and they both saw the car, there was a simultaneous "HOLY SH*T!" That of course felt good, assuming it was a good "HOLY SH*T" of course:). The son was in absolute shock that the paint was actually shining. He kept the car at his step mothers house I believe, he said he didn't even like looking at the car when he was there because the paint was so bad.

Also, owner emailed me a newspaper article about how some lady had accidentally shot her suburban over a sidewalk, through a fence and into their garage where the vette was stored and the suburban sent the vette flying and smashed the hell out of it. Obviously they had it fixed but that made me really want to make this poor thing look as good as I was able to. Over all I have to say it was a fun detail and the car did look amazing if I may say so. Such sexy lines on the car and seeing it all polished up was pretty awesome. Red was a really hard color for me to capture to show just how bad the car was and the pics do NO justice but hopefully you'll get the idea. The sun was going down when they picked the car up so I couldn't really get any sun shots but you should still get the idea. Best of the detail is when the owner came over with his son, who drives the car, to pick up the finished. His son said he hasn't even been driving ot because it looked so bad he hating seeing it and other detailers weren't able to do anything with the paint, aside from adding expensive buffer trails of course. I had the car in my garage with the door closed and with us standing there I put the door up and sitting there was a razor sharp looking sting ray. Here's the best part, literally at the same exact time, the father and son said HOLY SH*T!! The dad was almost in tears and the son just freaked. They had the car for a long time and the pride of ownership was back, it was amazing. Enjoy....

Chad,
You are on quite a roll my friend!!!
That was a masterful job of restoring a classic.:notworthy:
I also really enjoyed the story about the father and son.
Thanks for sharing this with us.:hurray:

i have a soft spot for red big block 71 vettes and you it did it justice for sure.. is that a single stage paint or not and how many hours did you put into bringing it back to life.

Thank you! It wasn't single stage and I spent about 14 hours on it at least.
