Claying/polishing in cold weather?

Do you find yourself looking for Detailing supplies in every store you go to? Grocery stores, Quick Marts, Gas stations, Pep Boys, AutoZone, Wal Mart etc etc.

I can never pass up a good deal. Heck I think I have 4 bottles of Eagle 1 leather conditioner which I may have paid 6 dollars total for. Today it was Meguiars Final Inspection for $4 a bottle at local Pep boys I bought the last 2.

I figure I will use the stuff eventually and it does satisfy my need to keep the economy going. Well its an excuse that works for me.

I did see that Viking has MT's now. Man do they seem to be crappy. I swear I could see through them and they only had nap on one side. I suggest avoiding them but would love to hear from anyone who has used them.

Speak up with great deals and stores to look for.

Guess My Name, I know what it's like!

I was at Long's Drugstore last night and while waiting for my wife to find whatever she was looking for, I was examining their small auto detailing section. Hehe, seeing that Turtle Wax stuff took me back to my HS days and my '88 Acura Integra, '81 Toyota Supra!

I wonder if there will be sales on Monday... I'm already going out to pick up some supplies so maybe I'll look around, and look at the paper on Sunday to see if I can catch one of those towel sales like I missed last time around.

Hmmm... this addiction is fast moving.

and since the detailing bug caught me....only about 1 yr ago...i too find myself scoping out every store i go into....especially the big drug store chains....Genovese...CVS...Rite-aid...etc...it usually starts by me seeing something from a distance...thru the aisles...like the unmistakable Mobil 1 can emblem....or Castrol oil...something like that.....then u kinda saunter over there...calmly....and usually its turtle waxes...Armor all city....and some crazy looking 'special'wash cloths for your car....and always a wash mitt made out of rawhide looking stuff...scratch city....and of course they move a few house cleaning buckets from that aisle over to there just in case your an impulse buyer and cant leave without something...

so...

the 2 bucket method is no problem for me ....i got 4 buckets...:D ....im not a toal loser...they are different colors....:).....

ps...the Strauss auto near me has all the Viking brushes on sale thru net wk...and the terry applicators too($1 for 2)...the round ones....i got 6....didnt see that large one i like...they sell out fast....damn detailing people....we're a quik bunck:p

No Strauss auto near me... I'm in Co... all we have is Autozone and Checker. Luckily, there are six or more within 30 miles of me so if one doesn't have it, the other probably does.

Never thought of drug stores...

but here,,,the drugstir chains i mentiones are like mini malls....huge variety of goods....and...they sell drugs....as a side business...at least thats how u would feel if you go in one....its totally unlike the mom+pop drigstores ,of old...which i liked alot better....because i knew the pharmacist and all....cant go wrong with autozone...targets...peps....no checkers near me...

No pep boys near me... a few in the state but they are too far, although we do have Napa, but I think they are more parts. Good ol' walmart and target and kmart can have good deals on the smaller items some times too. Maybe that's what your drugstores are like? a SUPER wal mart with a pharmacy in the back.. :p

It seems Targets has different stocks and prices.

Someone mentioned Mobile1 synthetics for $2.8 at Target but in the Bay Area it is $4.29. Also they don't have Vikings here.

Also check out Ross and TjMax for some great towels deal you may find. You can find a lot of RV/Charisma/etc. there at amazing prices.

Pick up a few foam paint brushes at Walmart as well for cleaning wheels. They are a few dimes each only.

ever since Steve mentioned those little foam brushes for getting in the corner window.....doing the vents and other tight places....i gotta get some of those little ones...and they are so cheap....thx

My mom told me to go by a local CVS since she seen some detail stuff there and its all clearance since they're closing down. So me and my cousin went by and it was all Turtle Wax. Now a lot of you know I'm a newbie for the most part and I dont use Klasse or any of the real expensive stuff you have to order......but I have long since gravitated away from TW. I was however looking for the Emerald Series stuff, because my uncle uses this on his Ram, Durango, and even his '69 Roadrunner and he's picked up about 20 or so trophies and been in Mopar Magazine, so I figure the stuff cant be all that bad...but all they had was that Finish 2001 or whatever its called. I dont think they even had Armorall. AutoZone and Advance Auto have a really nice selection of the really cheap stuff up to more expensive stuff (Meguiars #26 and stuff even better than that). Super Kmart has a bigger selection than Advance does. I get alot of my Eagle 1 stuff from Kmart, tire dressing and applicators, 20/20, etc. They also have some Mothers and Meguiars stuff I like to use. Its not Klasse, but its good enough to get compliments :)

I live in Chicago and was really excited about claying and polishing this weekend, but saw the weather forecast which sucks.

It will be about 63 degrees this Friday and I was wondering if I could use the BlackFire clay in that weather. Will it effect the results.

the car will be in the garage the whole time but it's still chilly.

I heard that when you wax the weather should be around 75-80 ideally for the wax to truly stick to the paint. fact or myth?

If I could clay and polish this weekend in 60 degree weather and get optimum results please let me know. Otherwise if everyone suggests I wait till it warms up I'll do so. THANKS!!

thx for the speedy replies! I suppose it will be around 5pm when I begin claying so it could be colder....45 degreeish? Still good to go?

Yea, your still good. Stick your clay in a zip baggie and put it in your front pants pocket for awhile. This will heat it up and make it more pliable :2 cents:

The biggest problem is that your hands will be cold and the clay will be somewhat less mallable. It will work fine but be slightly 'different' to use.

In the past I've kept the clay in a bowl of hot/warm water (as warm as your hands will permit). This has helped keep the clay malliable. If while working the clay if becomes very stiff, drop it in the bowl of water. You can manipulate it while in the water to fold it over to a fresh surface of clay.

Also, I have worn nitrile gloves, so this also aids in the slight/moderate increase in temperature of the water to start with.
