Claying necessary if doing a Full paint correction?

I plan on doing an old car that is horrible (90's Neon - silver). It is rarely washed (freebie with LOF), and never waxed. It is kept outside so the paint is horrendous. If I plan on a full 3 step most likely, SIP, 106FF, 85RD, is claying necessary? Is claying really to remove large contaminants that may scratch the paint when polishing?

Thanks,

Yes!

Prep is 90% and key to a well detailed vehicle. It takes no time at all to clay, so why skimp on the process.

I feel that when I clay it helps the polish become more friendly, what I mean is that it produces a more workable smooth surface. If you dont clay, the polisher may hop, your polish will stick to the surface, It will create overall aggrevation. For a process that only takes minutes it can save you a headache. Clay it !:bounce

I only did one car not using clay and the pads were so drity i couldn't bleive it. So yes claying is a must, otherwise all the dirt you pull out from polishing goes on your pads and you spread it around doing more harm than good i would think.

Yes some of the bonded grit can gouge your finish and you also end up wasting more polish as the contaminants absorb it.
