Clay removing wax coat(s)?

NattyBumppo

Strange name, ain't it?
Does claying with QD (I use the Mother's Kit) remove carnauba protection? Since my truck is not garaged I seem to end up claying allot (at least the hood and roof), sometime 3 times a month. Am I removing protective wax layer(s)?

Definitely some, but probably not all. I would slap some wax back when finished claying though! :)
I think that's the general answer to this question no matter what you wax with (polymers).

Natty,

I also do a lot of claying (vehicle outside 24/7 also). In the past, when I clayed my carnabua finish, I found that using a good carnabua quick detailer afterwards, (like CM or Clear Pearl) would touch up these spots nicely until my "once a month" coat of carnauba was due. :xyxthumbs

Good Luck!

When I did my last semi-annual clay bar routine, I did one vehicle without using a wax stripper first, like I usually do. I found that the clay bar required a lot more turning to get clean surfaces because it was constantly picking up a yellow wax residue. I am a carnauba user myself. I was using Meguiars Clay Bar which is white so it showed easily.

Clay is somewhat abrasive, so I'm sure it will remove something. If it is consistently waxed once a month, I'm sure it's insignificant.

My vehicles are outside 24 X 7 and the semi annual cleaning of Clay and waxing with another wax coat between of every 6-12 weeks depending on the conditions is usually more than sufficient.

Thanks folks. White_F150...the carnauba based QD is no longer a problem as I just received my CM :bounce. Already gave the truck a wash and QD. Man that stuff smells great and just as easy to buff out as the Mother's Showtime. I was afraid it would be tough since it contains carnauba and not just watered down solvents and silicone.

Doesn't it stink having to park the car (or truck in my case) outside all the time? I feel like there should be some kind of a support group for those of us who are garage challenged:sosad.

Natty,

That's a good idea on the support group for us garage challenged detailing freaks! :D That will make about 11 support groups that I'm in............ if you know what I mean! ;)

As for the CM QD, it's really nice stuff. However, I would suggest that you use your Showtime, or another non-carnauba QD when you're QD'ing to remove dust. For me, the CM and other carnauba QD's are a bit "sticky" for QD'ing to remove dust. After a wash though, nothing beats a quality Carnauba QD on a Carnauba wax job!

Understood. That's fine since the Mother's clay kit comes with Showtime QD so I should always have a handy supply. After the CM I may give One-Grand Show Off or EF Clear Pearl a try. As nice as the CM is, it is a bit pricey.....I guess whatever they put in there to make it smell so great is costly.
