Eric,

you forgot one. Never let a dealer prep your new vehicle. :scared

My friend is picking up his BLACK 03 PT cruiser tonight. He asked the saleman to make sure is was "Detailed" before he got there.:D I will let you know how the car looks.

As for the swirls.... it doesnt really matter at this point how they got there or who did them The thing to do is get rid of em.

Thanks for this post. I recently bought a new car and had been told about the clay bar, and wanted to do a bit of research before using it.

Funny thing, my car, which I did not include in the search for "clay bar ruined" is also a dark cherry red Hyundai Santa Fe. Small world, eh? I didn't pick the color, my budget and my need for low mileage on a used car picked the color, but it is really pretty when the sun hits it just right.

I didn't see anyone mention that cloth car washes cause the swirl marks, sorry if I missed it if someone did. I just got rid of my 11 year old VW Cabrio. After a carwash or two I brought it back to the dealer (still new) asking about the swirl marks, that's when I found out about cloth car washes. Now I never use them. Unfortunately those swirl marks are hard to avoid, and I think some car colors show them more than others.

Anyways, thanks for the post all!

What I really want to know is why he bought a PT Cruiser of all things.

going to clay my 07 toyota 4 runner for the first time with mothers. (nerver done claying before) could you tell me what the plastic bag test is?

Plastic bag test: take a small plastic bag, put your hand inside it, glide your hand over the surface of your car's paint, and you'll be able to feel the imperfections that claying will remove. You can achieve the same results without the plastic bag, but the effect seems to be magnified by using a plastic bag.
