Chrome Alloy wheel...no 56k

I offered to detail a friends Ford pickup on Friday nite. Then finish up on Saturday morning.. I was real excited to do another Black truck since I had so many new products to chose from. What I did not realize was how much work the wheels of this vehicle were going to be. Here is the wheel after washing.

I worked on the vehicle trying to clean up the wheel using Poorboy’s ProProlish, SSR1, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 all by hand using a MF foam applicator. Had some never dull and applied that to the surface of the wheel also. Worked on the same spot to see if I could diminish the stains that were on the wheel. I worked on it for quite a while and was not getting very good results. The day ended with... wheels "1" and detailer "0". I left the wheels coated over nite with ProPolish hoping that it would help my cause. It would seem that this was a wasted process for after taking it off the next day I saw no change.

Stubbornly I continued working on the wheel finally using repeated applications of never dull. Then wipe off the layer with a MF towel. After an hour of wiping and applying then wiping again I got pretty good results. But was very tired and disgruntled. I was thinking I had bit off more than I could chew. As I am doing this work I am gaining a deep respect for those of you that make your living trying to do what I had *perceived* as fun.

After the first wheel I went to the parts store and purchased a Power Ball from Mother’s. Using Never Dull and the PowerBall here are the results.

I did seal the wheel with PB WS and no I did not go and wipe off the remnant of product that still remains on the picture. I know...I will not sleep well tonite....NOT!!!

After this experience I am glad that I have OEM wheels on my truck. No matter how they look!
 
I feel your pain Kirk.So glad everything worked well for you.Kirk what did you use on the wheels to clean them at first.0000 Steel wool what have helped.

If they're uncoated, I'd use the Power Ball with the Mother's Power Polish or Flitz Metal Polish.

I find the wadding polish like Never Dull doesn't pack the punch required for neglected wheels. Its nice for chrome trim in decent condition in my experience.

Something like P21s Polishing Soap (excellent product) followed by the Mothers Power Ball and Polish, then a final hand application of a polish like NXT Metal Polysh would have done it.

I knew I should have started a thread about what to use.:wall Oh well I used what I had. :) Still had to go to the store to get the Power Ball. :mad:

Those are NOT Chrome Alloy Wheels which is why you had such a hard time. What did you use to try and clean the wheel and tire before you began polishing them. You have to be very careful with Aluminum Wheels that are not clear coated they stain very easy if you use thwe wrong chemical on them. It looks to me like you got some Westley Bleach White or some other no aluminum wheel cleaner on the wheel.

I have tried most of the aluminum polishes mentioned and the best one i have ever used that requires the least amount of effort is the Polish Made by Adams Polishes. # 1 & 2

Those are not chrome weels,it is polished aluminum.
flitz polish works wonder on those.
 
They look alot better. i know how much of a PIA it can be on them type of wheels. The best thing i found is CDA metal polish. And i think that dwayne has it on his site for sale.. I also think clean dean,bigron, and someone else uses it and recomends it on this site.
 
Ok guys I defer to your expertise.

I thought that they were chrome alloy wheels since on the center hub it states that they are alloy. So I guess that I assumed. Am certainly not a wheel expert in any way shape or form.

I just washed them with SSS prior to what I have listed. They were stained before I they got to me. I just tried to help those wheels. LOL Never again. Those wheels made minced meat out of me.
 
CW..he may have tried to clean them before with some type of wheel cleaner and it may have reacted to the metal...leaving the stains...you did a bang up job on them.....

Now relax and know you did the best you could have..and it shows they look way better now...

I agree you did in fact do a great job fixing them. And just for future reference all Alloy Means is the wheel is made of aluminum doesn't have anything to do with it being Chromed or bare or clear coated.

:redface: :redface: This is just reminding me that I need to do more research before I jump into detailing wheels. I know that I did no damage but am reticent to take on another wheel other than to just use soap and water.

I am not afraid of work but I hate *creating* work!!!

Oh great !! You come up with a great resource even before I had thought of trying to clean a wheel. :lmfao I know one of my problems in searching was I looked for chrome wheel polishing. OOPS!! I have it bookmarked now Joe. Thanks!!

Everything worked out for the better. The main thing is you can relax now,BTW it is nice to see you getting good use from the New Camera..

I'm hoping the weather will warm up a bit so i can try the DP 4 in one Rinse.
I still owe AG a review on the OPT Rinse & Shine. Mother Nature is very stubborn at this time of year.I guess it's the women in her :lmfao ..

I went through exactly the same thing yesterday also on a black truck. The wheels were slightly corroded and pitted to boot. My results were not as good as yours, I'm sorry to say.

The owner was satisfied but I am not. I ordered the large & mini powerball along with polish and extension last night. The wheels will be done again once the goodies arrive. I want to "wow" the guy when he sees the wheels the next time.

Great save by the way... The wheels look great.
