It's a brand. Their lines are "Der Shiney Stuff" for wax, "Der Tire Stuff" for tires, etc...
You do buff chemical polishes with a machine. The major difference between Chemical and Mechanical polishes is that Mechanical polishes rely on "grit" to "cut" the paint and remove oxidation/scratches/swirls, whereas a chemical polish is more of a cleaner that relies on the abrasiveness of the pad to do the correction. (More to it than this, obviously, but in a nutshell, there you go.)
