Check out this light

I was rummaging gthrough Home Depot when I came upon this light. It is a tubular style light that encases 2 42 watt flourescent lights, equal to 300 watts of incadescent lights.

It gives off a 360 degree powerful light source with very low heat, at about 1 amp.

It has an automatic on/off switch. The tube stores inside of an inner sleeve and when you pull up on the top portion the light beams on automatically....did I mention it was BRIGHT??

I have two 500 watt halogens and they produce great light but they also produce ALOT OF HEAT! This light is super cool and while kinda heavy it's easier to carry than my two 500 watt lamps which are also on a stand. This light folds up very compact. I hope it illuminates a car nicely.

This is a pic of the light while on.

This is a pic of the how much light it puts out. I was able to open up the case and place a piece of tinfoil inside so it now gives me a nice 180 degree area of light.

It cost $60.00 at Home Depot. Great for mobile detailers

Nice. I might have to get one, as I have a tripod setup with two 1000 watt halogens I got from Home Depot, but one of the lights keeps burning out bulbs...and I planning on picking up an extra light for when Sullybob comes to apprentice for a day with me on the 3rd. Anthony, are you going to get a chance to put this light into real action in the next couple days?

Thanks!

If it doesn't rain i'll be using it tomorrow and also Monday on a wetsand/concours detail. I'll update.

I think I saw that light when I was trolling through HD the other day. I'm doing more autobody and paint work now since the weather is warmer and running both my Halogen setup's does put out more heat than I would like.

Might check into this.

Dont mean to hijack but..

Is a single 500 Watt Halogen lamp good for spotting swirls? Its only $12.99

It will reveal alot of swirls and marring but for me here in South Texas they just produce way too much heat.....I mean it's already 98 degrees with 100% humidity without that dang light on!!

Hopefully this light I just bought will also reveal marring/swirls plus add little to no heat.

I hope to get to use it today but as of right now it looks like we have rain moving our way on the local radar :bawling:

Concours detail huh? I've only done a couple, but as fun as it was (and it's nice to be able to say you can do it), I find myself shying away from these complete wetsand and buff jobs...because damn they are A LOT of work. I suppose it depends on a lot of factors, but they each chewed up a couple full days...and of course there is always a risk of something going wrong - I won't do it again unless I get $1,500 - $2000 (I under bid the two I've done). Good luck.

Wow,thanx for burning my retinas,u could of told us to put on sunglasses, j/k Anthony...

Yea i did see this at Hd the other day i was going to purchase some tools then went to see the display for new Halo lights and i saw that i though about picking it up but since they didnt have a store display and i since i couldnt turn it on to see how bright it was......let us know how it turns out.....

Well I had a chance to use this light today and it worked nicely. Gave off nice light, didn't heat up and sure attracted alot of attention!

The downside is that the light is not adjustable like being able to move it up and down or angle it. If it could swivel at an angle it would be an awesome light to use.

Although I found it helpful as where I detailed this RUF Porsche one side was a bit darker and it gave off some nice light that revealed where the marring was just fine.

What exactly does a concours detail entail? Thanks

It's a very thorough, get every nook and cranny, type detail. I will wetsand some of the front nose piece, the wheels have been removed, the engine will be detailed, etc.

Now for a concours usually the undercarriage is cleaned and detailed the engine might be pulled out, painted and detailed and all grease must be removed from door jams and even the spare wheel must be detailed along with any tools that came with the car. The car "might" be wetsanded although many concours frown upon this, like Porsche. If too much orange peel is removed from a Porsche you will get points deducted.

In short, it may take two weeks or longer prior to a concours for the car to be prepped. The car is then usually trailered to the concours where it is gone over once more for a final touch up, covers are placed on the wheels until it is judge time. There are different levels or types of concours so not all are that intense.

Oh...I was under the assumption that you would be doing the complete wetsanding and buffing (though fun, can be a real nightmare too).

Anthony- Hmmm....a fluorescent light that shows marring! Might have to look into one of those. Thanks for the report, I'd been wondering about its marring-spotting potential.

And yeah, nobody does concourses like PCA. Note that the factory entries usually lose at the Nationals (they start with one right off the production line).

evenflow- It'll work OK, especially if you turn out the other lights and use it in an othewise dark shop when you do the inspecting.

I have no pics in action as of yet BUT as Accumulator noted, if you have a dark area this light will realy brighten things up. That's where it really shines....pun intended :chuckle:

Again though its drawback is it has no real adjusting to it. If they made it swivel it would be awesome, especially for interiors!!
