I'm an extremely poor detailer who is looking for an inexpensive rotary. Does anyone have any suggestions on what is the cheapest and easiest to use?

You can get a Chicago Electric Rotary for 25 from Harbour Freight. Look on ebay for some good deals. But you get what you pay for!

the rotary woob mentioned I have - it works just fine don't listen to him
it's a lil heavy but it works great and for 25 bucks you can't beat it.

I've had the Chicago Electric rotary for 18 months.
I may have been one of the first to get one...
Nonetheless, it is a fine machine (I'm about to buy a second!) Perfect for the weekend warrior, and good for a backup in the pro shop. For example, I keep a small backing pad on my Fein to use Meg's foam pads (80% of my work). And I keep a wool pad on the CE for serious cutting.
As I've said many times in the past, throw away the backing plate and pad tht comes with it. Get the right stuff an you'll be quite happy! :jump

Currently Premium Auto Care has INSANELY good prices on Lake Country 7.5 Curved pads for 5.95 / pad. You cannot find a better price on the market now. For backing plate you will need to search on their site or ask good ole dwayne

I'm sure that Good Ole Dwayne can provide, as he just sent me a 6" backing plate. Be sure to ask him about a 6" counter-weight also, if you don't have one.

The counterweight does not pertain to rotaries. It may, or may not, be important for the Porter Cable 7424/7336.

I use the Edge 2000 system which doesn't require a backing plate. All you need is the quick connect adapter. I don't know if premiumautocare still has a special to get a free adapter when you by two pads but you can check with Dwayne or go to their website.

Given that the Edge 2000 pads are as high quality as others I have to wonder why anyone would want to use anything else. They are so easy to change, no Velcro getting stuck so tight that the foam seperates from the pad, and you can use both sides and even have a cut and finish pad all in one.

If you are going to go rotary
and get the Chicago for 15 (or they have a lighter one with an led display for 50) then I would invest in the edge 2000 quick connect system - I think (not sure anymore) that if you get the edge 2000 pads from PAC they will give you the quick connector for free (at least they used to I think?)
