Challenge: Match the paint!

jimmybuffit

That'll buff right out!
As many of you know, my shop is new.

I have an 01 Dodge Stratus sitting in the shop. It is from a local 'big league' body shop, and they want me to buff the original finish to 'match' the new (baked) paint..

I have a plan, but I'm really interested the responses to this post.

I have several products/pads/machines available...

I've washed the car, and will begin 1st thing in the morning (Friday).

After the fact, I'll add an interesting point.

BTW: I'm as busy as I want to be. That's a good thing...

For me, It would depend on how bad they orange peeled it, or dry spray, trash etc. I would charge big money for that kind of work

If they did not match the paint then you will not be able to. I have worked in body shops and I am an insurance adjuster full time now. When a shop paints the car they may have to blend into an adjacent panel sometimes for a color match.

For example: If they paint a fender, then they may have to blend into the door and sometimes even the hood depending on how the fender comes up into the hood.

By you compounding or polishing the car it will only last for a short time if that. It all depends on how off the color is.

Silver metallic are the hardest colors to match. Then you have what is called 3 stage paint which is also hard to match.

I detail for a lot of shops out here in staten island, I see some awesome paint jobs were it was done right, and I see the butcher jobs where I could have painted better with a crayon.

So, I'll deliver the car today, after I put a coat of Meg's #26 on it. It looks great! I simply used SMR wiith the PC (rotary in a few spots).

It is from a quality local body shop... all the paint work is baked... my concern was making the original finish look as good as the new (UV fade, oxidation, etc.) The kicker is that this Dodge is a rental car, and I found myself thinking that it doesn't 'deserve' my best work...!

Well, it's now the most pristine rental I've ever seen!

Thanks for your thoughts.

Jim
