Chalky veins in dash interior....

I'm pretty sure my dash is vinyl, but the problem I am having is the pattern that runs through the vinyl has a slight chalky look to it. This is present on the door panels as well. I've tried cleaning it with leather cleaner, conditioner, alcohol, and dawn. The veins are still there. It's only noticeable in bright, direct sunlight. Is it supposed to be this way? Is this buildup, or possibly some type of fading? Just wondering if anyone knew of a restorative type of lotion or something for vinyl that might help bring out an even tone.

I'm not sure exactly what you're describing. But if it's the kind of chalky cracks in vinyl I've been dealing with recently, then I'll add my $.02. First I treated it with Poorboy's Natural Look, which gave some improvement. Then I used Back to Black, and was stunned at the results. That was two weeks ago. So far, it seems to be a "fix" and not just a "cover."

Thanks Lynn,

I have some Mothers Back to Black and I didn't even think to try that. l guess I'll just use some mild soap, or alcohol to prep the surface and apply it with an applicator. This stuff may come to good use after all, because I wasn't that impressed with its effects on my trim. Looks good at first but wears off real quick. Thanks a bunch! :xyxthumbs

There's also been a thread in recent days where some folks have used 3M Adhesive, Tar and Wax Remover with success for wax residue on vinyl. Take a look at this thread, as there are some precautions to avoid softening/damaging the vinyl.

Excellent thread! I'm definitely going to try that! I was just about to resort to Forever black for ext. trim, but it looks like 3M will get the job done. Sounds like 3M will work on the dash and interior too. Just in case it is too strong, I think I'll test it in an inconspicuous area first. Thanks again. :)

I think I would leave out the alcohol part. Alcohol is a drying agent. Now if you meant drinking some alcohol while working, I'm down for that.:xyxthumbs
