Cautions with steam for detailing?

Hi, I' just want some reassurance before I buy the McCullogh 1275 unit for steaming interiors, emblems, wheels, engines, etc.

I just want to make sure that the heat won't harm any plastics or carpets. What are some tips to avoid any damage?

The reason I ask is because a long time ago I tried a little steamer on some interior plastic and it's like it bleached it/faded it. I am guessing that I had it too close and the heat screwed it up.

Thanks

You answered your own question.

Yes, if held too close, for too long, damage may occur.

Nothing is as good as experience, just do less and then move on to the next level.

Like anything that requires a person on the end of a tool, experience is the teacher.

That McCullogh unit doesn't really get hot enough to cause any major damage unless you're being reckless with it; you can "burn" plastics like you described, but if you use good technique you should be safe.

You might want to consider picking up Renny Doyle's steam cleaning DVD. It is geared toward professional-grade steamers, but the same techniques apply with any unit.

A little different advice. Besides damaging the vehicle itself, be careful you don't burn yourself. Watch it if you ever wrap a MF around the tip and don't secure it tightly enough, some steam could come shooting out onto your hand/fingers when you least expect it. Instant, very painful burn.

thanks guys. appreciated. guess I'll go ahead and get it soon. any deals out there on the mccullogh/warner unit?

Just don't overdo it and melt stuff. Some plastics and synthetic carpets are more easily damaged than one might expect.

Yeah you have to be very careful on some carpets, just leaving the carpet cleaning attachment in one spot a little too long will leave behind the shape of the attachment!

is the renny doyle steam cleaning dvd really worth it? I'm just checking because for $40, I'd hate to buy it and be let down.

thanks dude. I have Everrit now
