cats and how to keep them away

Nope, if they try to climb on the car with two covers, the WS on top, they will slide off. I don't think they really like nylon-like material to sit on much

Just a darn minnit here, Bill...you use TWO car covers? And you got gf doing that too?? Well, I suppose that would help me in the decision-making process...being able to pick TWO covers instead of having to narrow it down to one...

Setec, yes, check out my posts on covers. The 2 cover idea came to mind after the cat/wild beast/whatever damaged the Noah cover by itself

I used to have a problem with cats in my neighborhood. I had a problem with one cat in particular. I got animal control in my town to loan me a trap and it trapped the cat within a couple of days. The animal control guy that delivered the trap said I could bring the trapped cat in, but if I just left it in the trap for 24 hours and then let it go, I would probably never see it again. It just so happened that I was out of town for the weekend when the cat got trapped. I let it out of the trap and it took off like it had been shot out of a gun. I never saw that cat again.

Now luckily coyotes migrate into the neighborhood at night due to the abundant food supply (fresh cats). It's kind of funny because until everyone figured out what was going on you saw all these missing cat signs on the lampposts around the neighborhood. My home owner's association has a web site with a forums section. One of the neighbor ladies was trying to start a petition because she said the city wouldn't do anything about the coyotes and one of her cats had gotten eaten. I send her a reply telling her that the coyotes are a native species and have more of a right to be there than her cats do. I went on to say that I love my dogs so I keep them indoors 99% of the time. If she loved her cats, she would do the same.

I know I sure would keep my cats indoors all the time. I'd be too worried to just let the cat roam around town aimlessly coming and going at any time.

If at all possible try and use your parents' cars so your's stays cold. I say this because I noticed my neighbour's cat only sits on my car when the hood is warm. Once it get's cold he moves to the vinyl soft top.

Sorry cat lovers of the world! I know there's a product out there that's basically a magnetic mat you place on your hood (battery powered) that give's them a good shock when they hop up. I'll try to find the link. Anyone ever see "The Cats Eye"? :-)

I did a search and found these:

Scat Mat

Another scat mat

We handled the problem by using a plastic warming pad from a local farm supply (it is used to keep piglets warm after they are born). It is hard plastic and will not get warmer than about 70 degrees. We put in a small igloo type animal house and put a wool cushion rubbed with catnip on it. The cat loves it, and stays off my cars.

My cat has the same setup, still jumps on the hood once in a while.

I personally trap them. I've trapped over 20 cats in the neighborhood and finally it's getting cleared out and/or the neighbors figured they better keep their cats inside. I don't let my dog pee and poop in their yards, on their vehicles, etc. It's a two way street. They would call the pound on the dog in a flash. So I simply did the same. The pound advised to trap them and bring em in. I've been doing it for years and have 2 traps set daily.

I borrored one of my daughter's water guns, filled it with distilled vinegar and shot every cat on my car with it. Guess they don't like the taste when they try to bathe. It took several shoot-outs but I think they finally figured it out. BTW - I have 5 outdoor cats, only the 3 young ones give me problems.

GOD....i hate those cats on my car...i aslo think they dented my roof....with little bumps....i hate iot everytime i go outside there is paw prints.....

Post advocating cruelty to animals deleted. This crap comes up in every "how do I keep cats away from my car?" thread, and it's NOT welcome.

This is a warning for all posting to this thread: Suggestions of cruel or harmful methods to deal with the problem will be met with a three-day timeout.

They sell these devices with a motion sensor that scare cats away with a high frequency horn.. one of those is probably your best bet.

You could do what I did and go to the local dollar store and pick up a few of the large one pound or larger containers of cayenne pepper powder and ring your car with it . Place the ring several feet away from the car. when the cat walks through it and later cleans his paws he will get a little bit of heat and never do it again. Yes it works, only problem is you need to replace the powder when it rains.
