Car detailing...an exercise in fultility

Unless you're making $ as a profession, don't you think it's a waste of time to detail a car? I mean... the way I hear you guys talk about detailing, it seems it will take an average person several hours to get the job done right.

An auto is most peoples second largest investment. Protecting that and making sure it sparkles is a good idea. Although, some people *cough *cough, can get a little carried away lol.

but its all in fun, and keeps people out of the house :)

Truth is, the majority of people out there don't care to detail their cars. I talked to someone today who felt that their car was only for them to get from point A to point B. They don't understand my obsession/madness with keeping my cars clean. I also look at it as pride in ownership of your vehicle.

yeah it does take several hours to get it right, starting with a wash, claying, polishing, pre-wax cleaning, sealant, topped with a carnauba wax. ;)

if i thought it was a waste of time, i wouldn't do it. i'm sure a lot of people on this board feel the same way. for most of us, we like to detail our cars, to keep them clean, shiney, and protected. and besides, what is so wrong with wanting to have a very nice looking car that looks better than how it came off the showroom floor? :nixweiss i spent a bunch of money on my car, i want to keep it looking good for many years to come.

just think about something you're passionate about, something that you just love doing, that you'll spend your time and/or money on. and just change that to detailing, and you might understand how the rest of us feel. :wavey

Cleaning an exercise in futility? I hope you don't feel that way about taking a shower too. I mean afterall your just going to get dirty again.

I finally got to cleaning the interior yesterday and it is very relaxing to get in, see it all clean and purdy and the smell of Natural Look....

And your point is?

I detail my car several times a year. I like being outside, and the compliments I get on my car keep me detailing it.

I also detail for profit, but I prefer to do my own car. I know that none of the work will go to waste (some customers go the the car wash a few days after a detail  ).

And the average person would take far more than a few hours to get the job done right. Not to mention the "average" person would use a couple of old T-shirts and some Nufinish and think that they are done. :nono

I make a good living off that line of thinking. :xyxthumbs

if you've ever walked away from your car and looked over your shoulder at it - your just making sure no one is gona nick it.

but if your walking backwards away from your car - you have the bug which comes from keeping your beauty in tip top shape!

I'd have to agree.....I intentionally park about 1000 feet away from the building, away from all the other cars, just so I can 'check my work' on my way back to the car.

I've never looked at detailing my car as a waste of time. Sure, it gets dirty after it rains, just like all the other cars on the road. But I've got the surface so well prepped that it's a joy to wash, and even that only takes me about 20 minutes!

If this is the way you feel, then can I ask why you are here? From you question it is apparent that you are not a professional.

For me, detailing is a fun hobby that provides stress relief...sort of like Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance...it is Zen & the art of detailing my car.

It also feels good to drive a nicely detailed car and know that the results are your work. I love checking my car out in parking lots, etc. As mentioned above when you turn your head to check out your own car and work, it is very satisfiying. It is even better when you catch someone else turning their head for a second look at your car.

The best part is having people ask what you use or who detailed your car. Even the folks at some car club meetings have been amazed at how smooth my paint is...and some have asked me to help them with their cars and new friendships are formed as a result.
