car broken into

so my wife's car was broken into last night. she examing the car and besides cig. ashes and a strong smell she sees no damage and all her things are in there along with paperwork like insurance/registration. There is also no evidence this was a quick joy ride - gas at same level, and trip odometer didn't change. Now, breaking in and opening all the doors of a car just to have a place to smoke seems strange, but I have no insight into the criminal mind. Are there other things someone would break into a car for that I'm missing?

I still had her file a report with the police just to have it documented and get some beefed up patrols of the apt complex, but they didn't even send a trooper over since there was nothing missing and she didn't see it happen. I'll be back home tomorrow and I'm also going to check the engine and in/around the seat for drug left overs before I let her drive the car again.

This is a non-modified 93 base model Mazda 626 that still has a factory stereo. The only thing this car could be good for is parts or for human traficing (common reason for auto theft in AZ). I have no idea why someone would break into this car and not take anything. I'd glad they didn't but am still a little paranoid.

They may have been attempting to steal it, but got spooked by something in the process and may have just bailed.

that's really odd. the first thing i would check would be garage openers, registration etc. but you say its there so who knows. spare tire, tool kit there etc? i've actually had those stolen so you never know :(

hopefully no important documents were in there and even if everything is still accounted for maybe they wrote down any credit card numbers or bank statement numbers or anything important i dono all im saying is although everything is there it dosnt mean they didnt steal anything! Hope this unfortunate incident never happens again.

medic,

sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident. hopefully, the bast***(s) will get what's coming to them!

thanks folks. the car was outside in our gated appt complex - I can't wait until the house is finished and I have three walls and a garage door to protect our vehicles. I only had her look in the trunk to make sure nothing was stashed in there, but I didn't have her check the tire.

I didn't think about them just writing down the cc number or some other information. I'll start monitoring that stuff, but hopefully nothing will come of it.

I guess I'll start pulling the fuses for some of the car components; a security system would cost 25% of what the car is worth. I doubt a theif has the intelligence or time to check the fuse panel to figure out that the reason the car isn't starting is becasue the fuel pump circuit is broken.

Might be just me being mega paranoid but I would (VERY carefuly) check all the seats for concealed used needles,I did hear of someone sitting down in a cinema seat feeling a *****,found a used hyperdermic needle poking out of the seat with a note saying 'you've just been infected with HIV',when it was later tested it did indeed contain HIV positive blood.

Don't want to scare you but its possible someone just wanted to shoot up.

Go buy the biggest/best steering wheel lock you can find, and start religiously using it,at least you can tranfer it from car to car unlike an alarm.

But I would check the car to make sure they did not have to dump something, such as weapon or drugs. So check in between/under seats and other places to see if they did dump something. If not just be safe.
