Can you let a polish sit on a car's paint?

Hey -

So I'm going to be polishing my whole car tomorrow and I'm thinking about polishing the whole car (sfx1, 2, and then 3 + pc7424) at once and THEN buffing out the whole car...

so i will polish with sfx1, in small sections, but i wont buff out until the entire car is done, and then buff everything out, and repeat with sfx2 then sfx3....

yay or nay?

also, is it good or bad to polish in the sun? I prefer to do it in the sun because i can see the product better and see how well it is working!

thanks!

i believe sfx1 & 2 are polishes that are meant to remove defects (may not need to use both, do a test spot and start with the least aggressive one first, check your progress and go from there), so you would work them in and wipe away as they do not need to dry. sfx3 is a pure polish/finishing glaze that adds gloss/depth to the finish and is used after you apply your lsp...

First.. if the product doesnt specify itll work in the sun, then dont. It will be a disaster. There are some out there that claim they can be used in the sun and they work in that environment. I dont think what you have is made for use in the sun, Im not sure though.

As for leaving it on the car when done with a section... I think that will depend on the polish itself. I can get away with doing a whole side of a car with Megs #80, then removing, simply because #80 has significant amounts of oils in it.... which keeps it "wet" if you will. I would never try this with #83 because it will dry up faster and will be a pain to remove if I let it sit too long. #83 Ill remove after one panel max.

I guess youll have to experiment with what you have. I used to wipe #80 off after each 3'x3' until I figured out it wasnt neccessary. I have no experience with the SFX stuff so I cant comment on that patricular line. Try doing a whole panel or door and see how it comes off... if it comes off easily after sitting.. try removing after doing 2 panels.. and soforth.

Good luck.

driver666,

It really depends on the polish . . . some polishes, if you don't remove them pretty quickly, will set up and be difficult when buffing off the residue. SFX is pretty forgiving in that regard, IMO. Here's what I've done with SFX (and this tip came from DavidB): Polish the entire car with SFX-1, don't bother removing residue. Then, polish with SFX-2 (right over the top of the SFX-1 residue), and remove after each panel. That will save you some towel work.

I've also experimented with polishing several panels, then going back to wipe off the residue. This seems to work fine with SFX, although I don't think I'd do the whole car before grabbing a towel. Typically, I'd do say, the whole hood, then remove, a fender and a door, then remove, etc.
