Can someone explain to me step by step the process of properly preparing a finish (claying)?

OK,, I have to ask here. Seems clay picks up grit and contamination and its recomended to fold/kneed frequently. OK. My thought is compared to the finish on my car why would I ever save a clay bar thats been used if its going to be rubbed on the finish of my paint when it has grit embeded in it?? If I spend $20 on a bar that I might use twice a year as recomended why not use it once and toss it???? I am a cheapskate but my finish is priceless in my book. Does that make sense? I feel like its best to chuck the clay than use it tll it full of stuff.
