Can someone explain hazing to me

Hazing is just a high number of very fine scratches...so fine that you see more of a haze in the paint, rather than individual scratches. It's like a cloudy film on the paint surface, preventing sharp, deep reflections.
 
look up the user black yukon (BLK_yukon is the exact name iirc). He did a nice writeup of how to polish with a PC. One of the pics is really nice and shows some hazing.

The severity can vary but it's usually caused by an aggressive polish or if you don't break down the polish enough
