Can I continually layer SG?

OK I just clayed my car and put AIO and SG on last week. Now here's my plan of action until next spring.

I will put another layer of SG on this weekend and then continually layer SG bimonthly (while using Sonus after weekly washes). So I should have 5 layers put on this year with the last one in November. Then winter comes (daily driver, never garaged) and the car won't have anything on it until Spring at which time I will start all over again with clay, AIO and SG.

Will layering SG this way compromise it's effectiveness or should I do the clay, AIO and SG treatment in November instead and take it that way thru winter?

Is it safe to assume that frequently using Sonus will not affect the SG layering?

Dan,

No need to start over in November. Just layer SG at your leisure. Layering won't compromise the SG in any way. It will only add to it, and make it more durable. Last year I applied 3 coats spaced 1 week apart in august with a carnuba topper on the 4th week. I never did anything else to the paint except handwash until end of Oct, and then sunoco touchless wash up until April. I just handwashed the car for the first time this past weekend and I was amazed at how good the car looked. The water was still sheeting a bit, which tells me there was some SG left (but not a whole lot). Point being that your plan of atttack (5 layers) will definately last you thru winter.

I'm with Bill. I also did 3 layers this past winter, and never got around to doing .clay/AIO/SG again until April. No problems whatsoever, except the minor swirls I still have to deal with when I have to do a full detail.

I would love to throw some P21S on now but I want to have multiple layers of SG so it's nice and durable for winter so the only time I could do it would be November and then there's no point since it would be covered in road salt all winter. That really blows. What I would give to have Klasse come out with a new SG that could be topped over carnauba then life would be good. You know if they can put a man on the moon blah blah blah..... you know the rest.

Actually Bill I understand what you mean by the SG beading effect. First post SG rain today and I loved the way the beads on my hood got bigger and shimmied and shook to the point I almost rearended someone because I was too busy staring at my hood. :doh One thing I noticed was my beading was small but not tight, is this normal so soon after applying?

With rain, the beads will be as big as the amount of rain that is coming down. More rain = bigger beads and vice versa. Don't worry about bead size and tightness too much with SG. SG was really made to sheet water. You should notice that as the beads get bigger, they will roll (sheet) off your paint.

I too add SG all the time, but I'll gently clay (or at least spot-clay) first to make sure it's going on a clean surface. The Sonus won't hurt anything, but *IMO* it doesn't do as much as some would like to believe. I'd rather spend the time/effort putting some SG on a panel or two after each wash (keep notes so you know how many layers each panel has).

~One man’s opinion / observations ~

Layering: by applying more products on top of one that has already cross-linked you can increase it’s density (up to a point). The thin film of product that’s applied isn’t really another layer.

Each subsequent applications adherence process is that the solvents work their way into the microscopic gaps and valleys of the previous ‘layer’ thereby creating an anchor, and by surface tension, when the paint film surface is level then this density can no longer be increased (i.e. there is nothing to anchor to)

A level paint film surface improves the paint film surface’s desired optical properties (i.e. surface reflectance, clarity, gloss, and depth of shine)

Experience unshared; is knowledge wasted…/

What happens once one has achieved this, will excess product just sit on top and cause a film or haze because it can no longer penetrate? I think this may have happened to me after approximately 15 coats of SG so I stopped. I just QD to maintain and reapply only when polishing out micromarring.
