California Car Duster

Just curious does any one have any horror stories about the California Car Duster??

I just left my 03 Cobra in garage for 3 days and forgot to put the car cover on it! Dust accumulated so I dusted it off my California Car Duster. So far it has worked fine for me.

Has anyone ever noticed that it created scratches/minor swirl marks?

Probably not but just wanted to throw it out there.

I have about 5 CCD's. I've been using them since the mid '80's and, if used properly, I believe they can be used without scratching the surface of the paint.... under certain conditions:

1. The car MUST be waxed or sealed and have a very slick paint surface.

2. The removal must be for DUST only... any dirt, road splash, bugs, etc. cannot be removed with the CCD.

3. The CCD must be used with only it's own weight (or less!). Never apply any pressure to the CCD.

4. After each pass the CCD must be shaken out before starting the next pass.

If you follow these guidelines, you will have good success. Like I said, I've been using them for years... even on BLACK cars, with success.;)

There will be others on this forum who will completely disagree and state that you get scratches every time the CCD gets near your car!

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion!!!:D

I have one, but I've never used it that much. My cars rarely just get dusty. On those occasions when it was just dusty, I've used it with no bad effects. As stated above, the surface must be "just waxed" slick and don't apply pressure while moving the duster.
Most of the time, I'd rather QD with an MF towel instead.

My parents have a 1999 300M. Dark charcoal. The paint had been totally ruined by a CCD.

Let me just say that I'm sure they have not been using it as CAREFULLY as Luster. I think the problem is it is marketed as a "magic" thing and people just take it out of the package and rub it all over the car.

Personally I would not use one because all that dust that it stores doesn't disappear, it has to be somewhere in there. That's just my way of thinking, I'm sure used properly it can be an effective tool. But in the wrong hands it has proven to do damage, I've always been one that if the car is so dusty, I wash it. If you live somewhere w/ water restriction it may not be an option for you. Just my 2 cents.

You are 100% correct! I've seen guys at car shows whip out that CCD and start to "SCRUB" their entire car with that thing. Applying pressure... I've even seen them BEAR DOWN WITH 2 HANDS! Probably applying as much pressure as I would with a PC on a major paint correction!!!

Too bad that improper use has given the CCD a bad name.:(

I had a customer who wouldn't let me claybar his car because he told me that claybar had ruined his paint!!! He was addiment. Same kind of deal. Someone probably dropped it on the driveway and continued to use it.:banghead::banghead::banghead:

I've always said, if used right, the CCD is one of the best car care products I've ever used. But again, just for dusting a waxed car, nothing more. I also shop vac mine out after each use.

Absolutely! :iagree: Not only shake it after every pass... VACUUM IT after every use!

cal car duster

I hava a CCD and it's ok, but I like my cheaper Wally-World one better. When I go to a show, I only take the cheaper one.

One other note about the Cal Duster. Don't ever wash it. I learned that lesson a few years ago when I threw mine in the washer.

Ruined it. Washed all the parafin out of the threads.

I don't think I'm brave enough to bring those things near my vehicles, they do wonder on my wood floors, and blinds.

I can just imagine a spec of dust getting dragged on top of a panel.
