buying a 7424 polisher

What is IPA?

Isopropyl Alcohol, AKA Rubbing Alcohol.

Why not [use an IPA wipedown]? Is there a downside to too much IPA or too concentrated of a mixture? Is there a better/safer product to achieve the same results?

Sometimes there's no need/desire to strip away what (certain) polishes leave behind. Perhaps some concealing is desired (not wanting to thin the clear any more), or at least not a problem, or maybe the polish leaves some wax/etc. behind that you want on there.

I use IPA (usually the 70% stuff) undiluted with no problems. Somebody here once cautioned about using it undiluted, but IIRC there were no specifics and most people here seemed to think it wasn't worth worrying about.

I find TOL's PrepWash more effective than IPA (TOL site: Top of the Line Auto Detailing Supplies ).

I trust your advice accumulator. can you tell me exactly what size backing plate and pads i need to start with.

What MrWillsi3 said. I forget what exact size my small backing plates are, but the ones made for a Cyclo, or for use with 4" pads on a PC, will work. DO NOT buy the one made for a rotary and then fitted with an adaptor to work on the PC; I don't think that's a smart way to do it...get one *made* for use on a RO/DA machine.

It's been a while since I bought pads, but I got most of my current 4" ones from Cyclo Toolmakers . If I were buying today, I'd lean towards either the HydroTech line from LC, or the new 4" pads from Meguiar's.

thanks again for all the information it has really helped.

ADS (AutoDetailingSolutions.com) has a deal on Megs 2.0 soft buff pads.

its 6 of your choice for $30. Not too bad, the nice thing about those too is they are 'self centering'...meaning they are indented on the back so the backing plate fits perfectly in the center everytime. Plus those pads are machine washable so you dont have to do them by hand.

He is located in Az...I've done business with him (his name is Rick) a couple of times and he's been quite helpful. I live in Az too so I dont have to pay shipping to get the goodies from him since he works about 2 miles from where I live.

If you buy from him tell him Wills sent you :)

Yeah his price is tough to beat especially for the meguiars.... Too bad he doesn't ship outside the states :(
