...and just because company A buys company B, it doesn't mean that they'll automatically consolidate their manufacturing and R&D...

Years ago I bought an AEG TXE150 random orbit finishing sander. The company was bought out by Milwaukee and the AEG TXE150 sander was discontinued from Milwaukee's product line. Milwaukee supported me with repair parts to repair it after the baseplate became damaged from dropping it. Prepunched hook and loop sanding pads became difficult to find for this sander once Milwaukee owned it. They had to be ordered directly from Milwaukee. The new sanding disks didn't last as long and were not as good a quality as the original German sanding disks were. I've not looked lately and there might be suitable disks in the stores. A few years back hook and loop backed sandpaper with performations for rear side dust collection was unusual enough that the sandpaper was not second sourced.
My point in bringing this up is that the concern of the original poster is valid. The PC7424 could be discontinued in favor of a less expensive dual action rotory buffer. Companies frequently buy out superior competitors and merge the product lines. Some prodcuts get discontinued, others re-engineered to manufacture them more cheaply and others dropped where a similar product fills out the lineup. I can envision a DeWalt verson of the PC7424 that been through a design review with accounting to decide how to manufacture it more cheaply.
If you've been sitting on the fence concerning this purchase, buy the PC7424 and the alternate counterweight so you have all the accessories.
Concerning contruction tools, most of the guys around here buy Milwaukee. Milwaukee tools last forever. I built a house years ago and did all the wiring myself. I used a Milwaukee 3/8" drill to drill all of the 3/4" holes for the romex to pass through. With auger bits on the drill, the drill was heavily overloaded but it took it for hours and never died. Hundreds of holes later, this abused tool was still going strong. My friend came to help with his Black and Decker. It caught in the first hole and just sat there buzzing. I actually looked for a Milwaukee DA machine bedfore buying my PC7424. I have many of Milwaukee's tools and satisfied with all of them.
Any fence sitters who like the PC7424 should buy the tool and the extra counter weight now in order to be sure of having one before they get dropped for one of a difference balance. I notice dewalt grinders have similar handles and motor. The Dewalt could be alstered to become a DA buffer.

Coach bought a top quality leather goods producer/competitor- Mark Cross. My hopes were that they would incorporate the line and as volume went up prices would fall and quality would remain the same.

Some customers were putting off buying less expensive (yet more profitable) Coach products saying that they were saving for Mark Cross (the best). (In the study they found that the customers rarely saved enough to buy Mark Cross).

The most interesting thing about Porter-Cable’s 7336/7424 is that among their most loyal users are vehicle detailers who buy their sander and adapt it to polish vehicles, and yet they do no market to this sector at all.
Anyone thinking of changing to the Cyclo will understand why most of the motor companies (Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai and Nissan) as well as the aircraft industry chose it over the PC

So maybe we should start a petition and let BD know that there is a strong following of the 7424 . Maybe they would make some improvements or start their own detailing line.

Thta's a good idea...if Black & Decker knew the grass roots love for the PC, I bet they might think more creatively about the market and improve the product possibly.
