Hello again
not sure which pads and backing plate to purchase for the 7336
miata really only needs a polishing followed by waxing, finish in
very good condition
finding autopia product selection a little overwhelming
actually looking for a good beginners kit for the pc 7336

Welcome Butch,
Here's a start for you. Since your Miata's finish is already good, you'll need pads to apply waxes, sealants or glazes.
Look at this pad chart. There are a few even newer pads not listed on this chart but it'll give you a good idea of what to look for anyway.
Pad Comparison Chart - Auto Geek Online Auto Detailing Forum

Many companies make many pads for all aspects of car work but you'll only need something in the 0 - 2 cut range for what you want to do.
So, maybe white, blue, red, or gold.
The most popular pad manufacturer is Lake Country and most every online company offers their pads.

I'll post a similar polish chart once you've had a while to digest the pad chart. With the two charts, you'll be on your way to making some purchasing decisions.

What colour (I'm Canadian) is your Miata?

Hey Butch,

Always stick to the basics. Whether you choose to perform every aspect is entirely up to you.

Basic steps in order are:

  • Wash
  • Clay
  • Paint Correction & Polish
  • Seal
  • Wax
Once you've finished claying is the idea time to do a little paint correction or at the very least use a quality paint cleaner to remove oxidation, grime or other surface defects.

Car polishing before waxing is the trick behind attaining and maintaining that sought after showroom finish on your car. The preparation prior to applying a sealant and wax is paramount to success.....

Foam Pads

To simplify pad usage, I've given a generic usage of pads and products. The great thing about foam pads is you can mix and match pads and products until the results satisfy the user.

Compounding

Compounds or aggressive products are generally used on firmer pads, Yellow, Orange, and Green.

Polishing

The White and Gray pads are generally used with polishes.

Sealants & Waxes

Blue and Red foam pads work nicely for applying sealants and waxes.
These are a very good choice of pads for the Porter Cable stye dual action polisher..

Hey Butch, from one old bird to another I suggest you consider an all in one product like this one:
XMT 360 Corrects, Cleans, Seals

It's proven itself time and time again, will cut back on the amount of work to be done, and leave a protected finish. If you still want to wax over the top then do so the next day. I also suggest you do not go above 5.5" pads with that particular machine, I also have one.

Lot's of good advice here!

Butch, welcome to AutopiaForums! At 64, you are my idol!

Please give the following threads a read-through.

The goal of polishing paint is to help the surface become more level.

The ultimate gloss potenital of the paint is determined by things like the type of the paint, the quality, and the color. We (unless we are the painter) cannot really adjust these things. However, we have the ability to take paint to it's fullest potential.

Another good read:

I would recommend starting with this kit.

Hi john
2001 miata color : Crystal blue
when car was @ 2 years old , i clayed , polished, and waxed for first
time, by hand. The car absolutely glowed. Since then have polished and
waxed every spring. Finish is great but that glow is just not there
anymore. Car still looks good tho !!! Has been 2 years since i last did
this process ( water still beads like newly waxed) amazing !! Looking to
get that glow back once again.
Love this car

Blues can look really great when they're done right.
A couple of buddies had/have the Miatas. Both guys really love theirs too and the guy with the copper red mica color always keeps his looking like a million bucks. Every time I see it, it looks like it just drove out of the showroom. I'm thinking yours might be a close second.
