Burgers

Yeah, Big Boy was the franchise name and you could put your name in front of the Big Boy as a franchise owner. I've seen several variations over the years. In Utah the owner had about 8 locations, he was JB. I didn't remember this until you mentioned but when we would visit relatives in Texas, we would stop at Kip's Big Boy, the restaurant may have been in NM or Texas, I don't remember. As an 8 year old kid I remember thinking, "what's up with that?" After all everyone new that JB's was where you got a Big Boy.

I met George Wallace at this restaurant, he was on the road campaigning and he gave me a gold colored silver dollar sized campaign coin. I had no idea who he was at the time.

It's amazing how much nostalgia has come back to me just by talking about hamburgers.
 
Yes, Church's Fried Chicken is still alive and kickin', at least in the D/FW area. Along with other large chains KFC and Popeye's.

I had no idea that Big Boy was a national franchise operation, which according to one site originated in California as Bob's Big Boy. According to that same site, Kip's began in Dallas in 1958, created by a gentleman named Fred Bell. Who the heck is Kip? :)
 
Reading this thread makes my mouth water! Oh yeah... White Castle! They've killed more cops than Saturday Night Specials.. clogged arteries. Open all night, sometimes the only place to eat after about 2:00 am. You'd get a dozen of those delicious gut bombs, dripping with grease in a paper bag for a couple bucks.

What time does Five Guys close?
 
I like 5 Guys...but that is all we have around here except for the standard Mc D's, Burger King, Wendys, Arbys...so it is really hard to compair "yet" to any of those other "burger" Places.

Our 5-Guys is ALWAYS busy....I like their food...but it is quite expensive. A burger, Small fries and a small soda will set you back $11.00 around here! They make all their orders to go...wrap up sandwiches in foil, Fries in a styrophome cup, everything in a paper bag....99 out of 100 people eat "in" when they go thier!! I would like to see them a little more "eco friendly" and just use a serving tray and small paper plates!
 
We went to 5 Guys last night. Good burgers, & absolutely fantastic fries! I think the best burger I've ever had is here in Indy at a place called "Scotty's Brewhouse". It's called something like the "Triple Prime Angus" burger. It's pricey though. By itself it's $10, plus cheese, bacon, & BBQ sauce all extra.. Fried are extra too, but all are fabulous.
 
I've done many of the top burbers many times on trips. Five Guys is a distant 3rd and their frys are way down from there. The Whattaburger (sp) the great Texas staple is a distant 2nd and they have good and plentiful frys. Absolutely no chain can compare to the In-N-Out burger and their fresh cut frys. And their chocolate shakes are tops too. Whenever I land in Califirnia, Arizona or Nevada the first stop after picking up our rental car is the nearest In-N-Out. Its so bad I now preload the address for the closest one to the airport in my mobil GPS. Now thats hard core :crazy2: Ric

Have you tried White Castle frozen burgers you can buy at stores? Are they the same taste?

Whataburger...yep you can find one pretty close but alas they are just a shadow of their former selves. Back in the 70s a double-double was the answer to your growling stomach. I still remember ordering my first triple-triple. It seemed as though it weighed just about what I did. :surrender We still eat there on occasion, but there is just something missing.

Big Leegr, I hope not. I've had the frozen version and that is just about the poorest example of a burger I've seen or tasted. It should be ashamed to even call itself a burger. Similar in size to the Krystal burgers, a location visited the area, but didn't stick around long.
 
That's a shame about Whataburger. I grew up in Fort Worth. DQ & Whataburger were my stops. I've been here in Ohio for 20 some years and still crave it. DQ around here only does ice cream and hot dogs.

Now I get my fix at Charlies Pit Stop in Cincinnati when I'm there. It's a biker bar but they have the juicy death by meat burgers I crave. Love their black and blue.
Charlies Throttle Stop I mean.
 
It has been a while since I last enjoyed a DQ burger. Might have to try one again. DQ takes me back even further than Whataburger. Remember those steak finger baskets and dipped cones?

it's the same burgers, but you would have to be able to duplicate the cooking process which is steaming them over onions in grease :D

as beercan pointed out to me a little while back .. there is nothing like a NY diner burger :drool: some how you just can't get a bad burger in a diner around here ... as for chains, I forgot how good Johnny Rockets were :wow:
 
Almost forgot about Big Boy's. Growing up in Milwaukee that was one our family's favorite stops. Not hard to figure out where Micky D's got the model for the Big Mac. Also a staple in Milwaukee back then was frozen custard. The Culver's chain not only has good food but their custard is top notch. Ric

Steak fingers were exactly what I'd go there for, man I miss those.
 
On another note there is guy here that has teamed up with a Buffalo rancher. He gets fresh weekly shipments. Cooked there or take home to cook.

You can get it cooked "still moving" up to med well any more and it dries out quick.( it's very lean)

If you haven't tried it give it a try, just don't get it over cooked it looses it's specific flavor quick. It's fine with just lettuce and tomato.

Buffalo is the only mammal that does not get cancer. Look up the nutritional values sometime.
 
Who has a good homemade burger recipe?

I had watched Gordon Ramsey's show and he had burger recipe that resembled what you use to make Salisbury Steak (egg, breadcrumbs).
 
The big boy's around Detroit aren't what they used to be. Bits of ground gristle in every bite...yuck. The best bar burger in Utica at an Irish pub.
