Buffing, is it circles or what???

I am in depth detailing my car for the first time, i have a kit from platinum, and i am at the polish stage...I heard that this is suposed to help remove swirl marks, and i applyed and buffed it off in a circle motion (by hand) and i was wondering if that is how you are supposed to do it cuz it seems like that would create swirl marks..

In short:

follow the flow of the wind: on the hood and roof that is from frond to end in straight line applying and buffing, no circular motions

on the sides : most go up and down, again,no circular motion
