Buffing glass?

I'm posting here for lack of a better place. I have the porter cable 7424 like eveveryone else.

I drive a 1999 Mercedes C230. Anyway I very lightly scratched my windshield with my PLASTIC ice scraper the other day. I can't believe this is even possible. Is this something that can be buffed? ehhh Thanks :nixweiss

Two things may have happened...you may have gotten some plastic residue from the scraper on the glass, which just looks like a scratch, and will probably come off, or you caught a piece of grit between the scraper and the glass. Glass is harder than paint, but that road grit is sand/rock, and it will scratch glass. There isn't much you can do for it because glass is so much harder than paint that the paint polishes won't really remove any. There are some glass polishes...someone else who knows more about it will chime in with some options.

Be VERY careful with ceriums oxide. If you buff too much or too long, you will leave warped spots on the glass. Ask me how I know :)

And a warning about polishing MB glass-as you know, it pits easily. Well, when you polish it, those little chips show up a lot better. I went through 3 windshields in 3 years on my C-everyone replaced by insurance because of pitting. I used the Zaino glass polish-won't remove defects, but does make it shiney.

I can attest to the fact that MB glass actually scratches & pits pretty easily. be very careful using anything abrasive.

I learned an expensive lesson the hard way ...

you wouldn't believe the etching I have removed with zaino glass polish, so I am confused by your statement.

Sorry, I should have been more clear-I meant things like scratches, pitting, etc. I agree, it does a great job on water spots. I even asked Sal about it and he said, nope, won't touch scratches (my side windows were scratched from the rollers).

just came across this post searching for answer to same problem,

is there any sort of 'wax' that can be applied over glass to hide these marks.

i noticed streaks like this in my glass, seems like its from the wipers dragging sand/dirt across

i've heard of products like rainx, but haven't had chance to try them out if they can hide such marks?

A good (I stress good) mobile glass repairman can buff out scratches. I talked to a guy the other day who trains other professionals in this art. Of course we both laughed when he said he's actually only got 20 calls to perform this service in the last 10 years.

Anyone know about those treatments that glass shops glaze over windshields to fill in scratches and pits? I'm getting sick of all the pitting in mine.

I'm sick of the swirls in my front windshield. I remember last year I used Zaino's Glass polish with a PC and cutting pad and it didn't do anything for the swirls. I think I might try a rotary this spring and see it helps. If I mess that glass up, oh well, and I will prolly get it replaced since I do have a chip in it.
