Buffing 101 vs. 93 Black Maxima...

Clean Dean

Keep it clean !!!
1993 Nissan Maxima Hood…

Yesterday taught a couple of “student of the art of detailing” how to effectively use the rotary buffer to correct moderate to severe paint defects. First, we picked up a hood off a black 1993 Nissan Maxima at a local salvage yard (clock showed 230k miles).

I demonstrated with a 4 step process using a

1. Heavy cut compound + yellow wool pay with my Dewalt 849.
2. Heavy leveler with my green light cut foam pad.
3. Blue foam with a medium polish.
4. Final Polish swirl remover and a white foam pad.

We then all took turns burning the paint. The hood will obviously never be restored to showroom condition, but it well served to demonstrated what you can do with a rotary with the right abrasives, pads and technique.

Figured I would share a few pics with my fellow buff nuts …

Hey Clean Dean, good to see you around here and there. Looks like you guys had a nice detail teaching session. I don't think they could learn from a better detailer. That hood looks great.

:bigups :bigups :bigups
It is amazing what can be done by a true professional using the right tool the right way.
My one experience didn't result in burning the paint, but the single stage red I was working on had a fine line between shiny and gone. I crossed that line several places and haven't tried a rotary since.
Looking at your pictures makes me think I should try to learn the proper way to use the rotary.
As I have said before, a friend of mine, (good with the rotary), calls my PC a toy.
Is the extra weight of the DeWalt compared to a Mkita a benefit or a hindrance?

I just started to really use my rotary again and have found it so much better then the PC, the time alone that it saves is amazing.

I just yesterday did a RAV4 same color with almost the same hood (quality wise). It came out really nice and the customer loved it...

Although after I was done with just the hood I saw that my Red pad was now black...is that the oxidation?

By the way nice turnaround...looks great!

Stephen - I've heard but have not seen or read difinitive evidence that Toyota uses SS paint for their blacks. Did it behave like SS paint? Just curious.

Beautiful transfomation, Dean. Watch out - you're "students" might be reproducing those kind of results (j/k).

Thanks guys !!! Been a while, but some other endeavers have kept me from posting on these forums for a while. Glad to see some familar names still around. Yes, Toyota/Lexus do use single stage for their older model black cars, and I have ruined a few wool pads in my day on those cars.

This Nissan was clear coated, and burnt up the hood pretty bad in a few places just to show how easy/hard it is to burn through the clear. I'll try to get some pics of the burns the next time I am near the hood.

Yes it did, I had just assumed it wasn't SS paint. But it sure acted like it.

Very nice job on the hood. I wish I had someone around here to teach me how to properly use a rotary.
