Budget Detail....anything else i need?

Hello everyone! For starters, I am the proud owner of a 1994 Pearl White Subaru SVX.

I am only 18, so i'm working on a limited budget here (trying to get my dad into hard-core detailing...so i can reap the benefits ;) )

Anyway...made a stop at Pepboys today, picked up the Mothers Clay Bar, and Mothers Sealer and Glaze (phaze 2). I also have the full line-up of Ibiz products.

Just wondering if this is a good start for my first "major" detailing? And what the order should be.

Dawn wash -> Clay -> Sealer/glaze? -> Ibiz Carnauba wax? -> Trying to get some S100 tomorrow too.

Sound good? Am I missing a step?

Thanks for the help everyone...I've spent the past 5 days pouring over all the archived info.

Oh...1 more thing, either i'm very bad at searching...or...i dont know...but what is the website for Paksak? Would like to order some quality MF towels.

Welcome to Autopia, Bwana!

You are a smart newbie to go through the archives and soak up the information available before posting! It can save you from having to ask a lot of questions.

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan laid out. The only thing I'd add is to wash your car with a good carwash shampoo after claying (Meguiar's Gold Class or Zymol blue car wash shampoo can be found at your Pep Boys). Also do a polish before putting on a sealant glaze. S100 makes a great polish and is inexpensive. Or is that what your Ibiz products are for? I am not familiar with those...

Nice looking car! Is that a pearlized paint?

Enjoy your Subaru!

You should try to get a Swirl Mark Remover like Meguiar's #9, or 3M SMR and use it after the clay bar. If you cannot find it, then get a good paint cleaner like Mother's pre-wax cleaner. It'll give you that sparkle you're looking for.

I totally agree. If you don't have a paint polish you need one. An SMR at the very least. The Mothers cleaner is good too.

Your car will look only as good as the prepping and polishing. Sealer Glaze and carnauba are only makeup-type products and will look only as good as the polishing steps before them.

The better the prep, the better the shine.

Ibiz! Wow, haven't heard that name in ages. About 10 years ago I bought a bottle at the NY Auto Show after the guy turned my cruddy, dirty brass house key into a shiny new one!

Make sure you polish the car prior to the glaze. I use the Mother's glaze on my white Honda and am pleased with it. I'd use Meguiars #9. You can get it at Pep Boys.

Keep bugging your dad. Maybe he'll splurge for a PC and then you'll be stylin'!!

Bwana- Welcome to Autopia! Nothing I can really add to what the others have said, but I DID want to commend you on having a cool car, doing your research prior to your first post, and an obviously WELL-THOUGHT-OUT first post :xyxthumbs

Welcome Bwana. :welcome

I totally agree with this! :D We don't know what kind of shape it's in and what kind of defects your paint has in it, but seeing as how the car is almost 10 years old it most likely has its share of swirling and possibly oxidation. It depends on how it's been cared for of course. You're probably looking at a swirl remover at least, and maybe more since I assume you'll be doing this by hand.

PS: don't forget the Gatorade. :D Good luck, and post pics when you're done. I don't see much of those SVX's anymore and always thought they were cool cars. :xyxthumbs

Hi and welcome Bwana.

What everyone else said :D

I've got a question. You wrote
Ibiz Carnauba wax? -> Trying to get some S100 tomorrow too

I'm wondering why you need two carnauba waxes. If it were me and I didn't already have the Ibiz Carnauba wax, I would just go with the S100.

The better the prep, the better the shine.

100% agree :up

The other things to think about are some wheel cleaners, plastic protection, lots of foam pads, interior shampoo and as many MF towels as you can get hold of. Dont worry to much about specific products, technique and skill are worth more than any product.

I use the cheaper MF towels for the wheels, engine bay etc, so dont spend all your budget on first class MF's.

The official name of the paint is Pearl White...so I dunno if it's truely pearlized, but it's definately not pure white, it has an odd "glow" to it. :nixweiss

Is meg's #9 do basically the same thing as S100?

:bow Thanks everyone for the info.

p.s. *slaps himself for forgetting the h in shak*

"S100" is a brand, but usually refers to the carnauba wax.

:) #9 is a mild abrasive polish. After polishing, glaze and wax.
