rarrr!

Now that's feather-footing it!!!

I am averaging 31 MPG on my 93 accord wagon with 191,000 miles on the clock--great cars, great cars!!

Geez Corey.. you and your abstract posts that don't give enough information :(

*edit* are you saying that managing 327 miles on a little more than half a tank means $4/gallon isn't a big deal?

My focus (daily commuter)gets 20-25 in traffic and 30+ on the highway. I dont use the highway to get to work though :( I can usually baby it through my small commute shifting when the little light tells me to and it will do ok.

My SS gets about 12 mpg around town and will burn nothing less than premium....I just had to bump that timing up, didnt I? :D

Im not buying a hybryd until they are over 70 miles per gallon, then I will consider. At 45 miles per gallon its not worth it to me now. Rumor has it the 2010 Prius is going to be 100 mpg, I will be on he waiting list if that is the case.

Screw the Prius, looks like Ford is working on a hydraulic hybrid that will easily match the mileage of the current Prius. Imagine a full size F-150 that can achieve 60 mpg. If they can scale it down to fit in smaller vehicles it will be amazing...

Excellent articles!

I'm excited to see that manufacturers are seeing the writing on the wall.

I'm right there with you. We just traded our Ford Explorer (17 MPG on a good day) for a VW Jetta TDI (36-40 MPG without even trying). The TT has been assigned to weekend only driving and only requires a fill up every 3-4 weeks. So long story short, my monthly gas costs went from close to $400.00 down to $175.00.

One thing to consider is how much that high mileage actually saves you. For example:

Let's say you drive 10k miles a year and pay $3 a gallon.

Car A gets 20 mpg - Annual Fuel Cost: $1500

Car B gets 45 mpg - Annual Fuel Cost: $667

Car C gets 70 mpg - Annual Fuel Cost: $429

So by upgrading from Car A to Car B, you saved $833 a year in gas, but by upgrading from Car B to Car C, you only saved another $238 an year. Bumping the MPG all the way to 100mpg would only get your fuel cost down to $300, which still only saves you $367 a year over the 45mpg car. Sure, I'd love to spend only $300 a year on gas, but if I'm spending $1500 right now, I'd be ecstatic about just getting to $670.

My point: sure, a 100mpg Prius would be cool, but a 30 mpg Ford Explorer would save people way, way more money. I know the car companies have to use one or two models as a "proving ground", so to speak, for new technologies, and that's what happened with the prius. I just hope that these technologies keep making it into more cars, because that's what will really start to save people money.
