"Breaking Down SMR"

What exactly does this mean? How long do you have to use the PC before it breaks down SMR and what does it look like. How do I know when to stop polishing a panel?

The "Breaking Down" of an abrasive is the actual breaking of the abrasive partices in the polish into smaller particles. The friction and in some cases heat from the machine aid in this process. As the particles get smaller the marring left behind by the abrasives gets finer and finer untill you get to the point were it is not visable to the naked eye.

Depending on what type of machine you are using this can take a very long time, or just a matter of minutes. The key is to work the polish at low speeds for a good amount of time, then rework the polish at higher and higher speeds untill the polish is fully broken down. That is for an orbital like a PC...you don't want to go higher and higher with a rotary. :)

So how do I know when to stop? Do I polish with the PC until the SMR is dry and powdery, or continue beyond that? I watched the PC video but am still not clear on this.

Thanks

Keep polishing untill the polish is almost dry, but not to the point of being a powdery residue. When removing use a couple sprays of QD as lube to prevent any further surface marring by any abrasive that is left. :up
